Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage looking to get their season up and running after defeat in the opening game of the season against Arsenal

Manchester United were frustrated at Craven Cottage as Ruben Amorim's side drew 1-1.

The Reds were unable to hold onto their lead that Leny Yoro gave them, albeit thanks to a heavy deflection off Rodrigo Muniz, as he headed home from a corner after 58 minutes. But Fulham gave their deserved equaliser on 70 minutes through Emile Smith Rowe's first touch since coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute.

United had started the brighter side and will feel they should have been in front in the opening minutes when Matheus Cunha struck the post from Mason Mount’s lay off.

Ruben Amorim opted to start Mount again following a promising performance against Arsenal last week. It’s a pivotal season in the career of the former Chelsea star, who is now in his third season at Old Trafford.

Injuries have played a massive part in the 26-year-old struggling to find his feet, but Amorim’s faith to deploy him from the off instead of new £73.7million striker Benjamin Sesko, explaining the Slovenia international wasn’t yet up to speed with United’s patterns of play.

Another one of Amorim’s surprise selections started the game strongly, with Altay Bayindir making a smart save to deny Josh King and Alex Iwobi.

While he almost grabbed an assist when Cunha was then denied brilliantly by Bernd Leno as the Fulham stopper produced a save to match the Brazilian’s incredible control as he brought down Bayindir’s kick out before striking eyeball to eyeball with Leno.

However, the Turkey international narrowly avoided being caught out by another corner, following his disaster against Arsenal, but Calvin Bassey was unable to direct his header on target after Bayindir was caught underneath the ball.

Fulham’s tactics from set-pieces were easy to see as every corner in the first half was a deep in-swinger, seeing Bayindir caught underneath the ball every time without fail like a headless chicken.

Bayindir’s future, along with Onana, looks set to be called into doubt in the coming days as United close in on the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in a £17m. Surely spelling the end for one of the goalkeepers’ time at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim’s side couldn’t have wished for a better opportunity to score their first goal of the season when Bruno Fernandes stepped up from the spot after 37 minutes.

The United captain failed in his chance to break the deadlock as he smashed ‘the worst penalty ever’ high and wide of the top corner.

Just five minutes into the second half, Amorim had seen enough to introduce Sesko and Diogo Dalot in a double change with Casemiro and Amad Diallo, seeing United play a middle pairing of Fernandes and Mount.

And it didn’t take long for Amorim’s attacking change to be vindicated as the Reds took the lead shortly after when Leny Yoro’s header deflected off Rodrigo Muniz and into the back of the net.

Bryan Mbeumo’s corner found the head of the French teenager to score his first Premier League goal, albeit thanks to an incredibly kind deflection, that is if the goal is awarded to the defender.

As Fulham reacted the strongest after going behind, Amorim moved to shore up the midfield by introducing Manuel Ugarte for Mount in an attempt to limit the space that Iwobi and the promising Josh King found, before the latter was replaced by Emile Smith Rowe, who provided an instant impact.

With his first touch since coming on, Smith Rowe ghosted into the box past Fernandes, getting a toe on the cross in front of Bayindir after Matthijs de Ligt left the ball believing it was bouncing through to his goalkeeper.

Fulham had the wind in their sails and looked the more likely to win the game. United's midfield was picked through, while Cunha and Mbeumo struggled to see a meaningful touch, while Sesko didn't get a sniff.

A frustrating result for United given their first-half chances, but a point deservedly split between the two clubs in the end.

United’s rebuild is going to take time, but can it really even begin without the signing of a centre midfielder? Carlos Baleba’s move looks off the table this summer with Brighton slapping a £100m price tag on the 21-year-old. While Adam Wharton could be difficult to prise away from Crystal Palace after they lost Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
