Plymouth produce shock of the century and dump Arne Slot's Liverpool out the FA Cup
Liverpool are out of the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Plymouth - who have produced the shock of the century in the fourth round on Sunday
It was party time in Plymouth as they produced one of the FA Cup shocks of the modern era.
Plymouth welcomed the might of Liverpool to their small corner of the UK on Sunday afternoon. The Reds are flying high at the top of the Premier League and, quite frankly, looking like champions elect.
However, Arne Slot's near perfect season would unravel over 90 minutes far on the South Coast as the Reds huffed and puffed against a resolute Plymouth side who had no intention of being beaten.
It was a rotated Liverpool side, but it was far from weak. Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all made appearances - but they were hapless to stop the Pilgrims' party.
The defining moment would take place just after the hour mark, Harvey Elliott could have no complaints - although he tried - when he handled the ball in his own area.
Caoimhin Kelleher has positioned himself as something as a penalty specialist - before Saturday he has saved three out of his last four spot-kicks in normal time.
But even the Irishman was left picking the ball out of the net when he was sent the wrong way by Ryan Hardie. 1-0, and the stadium was shaking.
Liverpool pushed for an equaliser, but they were met continuously by Nikola Katic. Superlatives can't put into words Katic's performance - he stopped the best team in the country by himself at times.
"Shocking, Plymouth deserve this, that's what happens when you take a fixture for granted," one fan fumed. While a second said: "Plymouth, last in the Championship kicking us out of FA Cup. That's bonkers..."
"Plymouth Argyle are objectively a better side than Spurs," a third joked. A fourth posted: "I don’t want to hear 'Liverpool rotated'...This lot lost to Plymouth… That Slot system HAS to crumble at some point!"
And another added: "You can spin it how you like, but these guys shouldn’t be losing to Plymouth. There’s more than enough in that XI to look mildly threatening at least..."
It was 1956 the last time Liverpool were beaten by Plymouth, on that occasion, in the second tier, Plymouth ran out 4-0 winners.
Sunday afternoon wasn't quite as emphatic - but it will be just as historic.
