A packed bus travelling from Lima to the Amazon area of Peru has plunged 160ft into a ravine after it overturned following a crash, with at least 18 people dead and 48 injured

A devastating double-decker bus crash has killed at least 18 people after the vehicle plummeted over 160ft into a ravine and 'split in two'.

The bus, packed with passengers and en route from Lima, Peru, to the Amazon region, overturned after veering off a winding road, leaving another 48 passengers injured on Friday (25 July).

Officials reported that 15 passengers were found dead at the horrific scene, while three more tragically succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

A desperate rescue operation was launched following the dreadful accident in an effort to save as many lives as possible.

Tragically, officials confirmed that two children were among those killed when the bus plunged off a highway, landing on its roof in Peru's Junin region. The bus, operated by Expreso Molina Líder Internacional, was carrying over 60 people at the time of the crash.

Aldo Tineo, a health official from the city of Tarma in central Peru, stated that authorities were currently identifying the deceased and investigating the cause of the fatal incident, reports the Mirror.

Local TV footage revealed the double-decker had split in two upon impact, with shattered glass and broken windows strewn across the crash site. Both firefighters and police were involved in the rescue efforts to extract victims from the wreckage.

Regrettably, Peru has a tragic history of deadly crshes on its winding roads. In July 2024, at least eight members of the same orchestra group perished when their bus veered off a road and into a ravine.

A group was en route from Oxapampa to Lima, the capital of Peru, when disaster struck near Tarma. The tragic accident claimed nine lives and left 12 others injured.

Among the casualties were eight members of the 20-strong Antología del Folklore orchestra and the coach driver. The musicians had just wrapped up a performance the previous night and were heading to their next gig when the horrific incident occurred, with their vehicle plummeting down a 200m (656 ft) ravine.

Omar Valdivia, who spoke to local press at the time, explained: "A car suddenly moved into the driver's lane and to avoid crashing into it, the driver had to steer slightly, which caused the bus to go off the edge."

In another unfortunate incident in October 2023, a British tourist was among those killed in a coach crash in Peru. The holidaymakers, including several foreign nationals, were travelling to a popular spot known as the Mountain of Seven Colours in the Peruvian Andes.

The 32-year-old Brit lost his life and over 20 others were injured when the coach veered off the road, rolled multiple times, and ended up on its side. Officials confirmed that the young man died after becoming trapped under the wreckage.
