Erik ten Hag can't keep straight face when quizzed on English lessons and Man Utd job
Ajax chief Erik ten Hag couldn't help but smile when he was quizzed on taking English lessons and the Manchester United job - but he did try and play down talk of a move
Erik ten Hag couldn't keep a straight face as he tried to quash talk of a move to Manchester United in the summer.
The Ajax boss has been persistently linked with the vacant Old Trafford role after his stunning work with the Dutch giants. During his five years at the helm in Holland, Ten Hag has guided Ajax to two Dutch titles and implemented an attractive brand of attacking football.
A number of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham and Newcastle, have already tried to lure Ten Hag to England due to his impressive work at Ajax. But the Dutchman recently admitted that he was "ready" for a move abroad - leading to speculation ramping up. Reports have also claimed that the 52-year-old is taking English lessons in a massive hint that he's keen on the United job.
And he struggled to play down those rumours when he was quizzed on them prior to Ajax's crunch Champions League clash with Benfica. "I don't think today it's an issue," Ten Hag told BT Sport. "It's about today's game. I focus on that and I don't pay any attention to other subjects, I will only focus on Ajax [and] Benfica."
And he also insisted that claims he was taking additional English lessons were untrue. He added: "No, that's not true. We talk English, we talk English in the club because we have a lot of foreign players. In Holland we get well educated in English."
Mauricio Pochettino is the other name in the frame to succeed Ralf Rangnick, who succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis. The former Tottenham coach looks set to be available in the summer after the French giants were dumped out of the Champions League last week by Real Madrid.
However, the calamitous situation at Chelsea has seemingly thrust a new name into the running to take over at Old Trafford in the summer. Thomas Tuchel has been tipped as another viable candidate to succeed Solskjaer - if United can take advantage of the sanctions that have been slapped on the Blues.
Scholes hinted that he believes that Tuchel could be available in the summer as a result of Chelsea's uncertain future. And he reckons that United should be going all out to source a top-class coach like Tuchel or Antonio Conte.
"I would have gone for Conte or Tuchel," Scholes told BT Sport. "It looks like one might be available at the end of the season. Those are two top class coaches that strike fear into players and win, which is the most important thing. United, with either one of those managers, would be much better off."
