Who is Baller 'Mystery Premier League ace' theories – 'fat' calves to terrible free-kick
The Baller League returned for its second season as a ‘mystery Premier League star’ made his debut in the tournament, and there are a number of clues for who they are
Baller League made its return to Sky Sports for season two on Monday night and a ‘mystery Premier League star’ made their debut.
The indoor six-a-side tournament played by former professional and current semi-pro aces, and managed by legends of the game from Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and John Terry, to social media sensations like Niko Omilana, Sharky and Miniminter.
Last season saw Sharky’s SDS FC beat Maya Jama and Alisha Lehmann’s MVP in the final at the O2 Arena. And the battle to be named champions this time around has seen Omilana claim that a current Premier League player has joined his NDL FC.
On Monday night, the mystery player made their debut, coming on as a substitute to take a free-kick wearing a mask, long sleeves and long trousers to hide their identity.
The player struck the free-kick with power straight at the goalkeeper, who made a comfortable save, before he headed back off the pitch again.
Fans on social media have been putting forward their suggestions for who they think the masked man was. One pointed to the player only being on the pitch and taking a free-kick to mean the star is a free-kick specialist, seeing suggestions of West Ham’s James Ward-Prowse.
One X user wrote: "I believe this is James Ward-Prowse." A second said: "Could be JWP but feel like he doesn’t run up exactly like that."
A third joked: "Please don't f****** be James Ward Prowse man my club has enough shit to deal with."
However, at the Daily Star Sport, we asked Grok AI who they think the mystery player is, AI answered: “Based on the buzz from Monday night's Baller League kickoff, where Niko Omilana's NDL FC brought on a masked mystery player strictly for set pieces (like that free-kick attempt that got saved), fans went wild speculating it was an active Premier League star.
“The hype was real—Omilana teased it as a "crazy" first for the league—but the reveal (or leak) points to it being Kevin Weggen, a set-piece specialist from the German Baller League.
“Not a PL regular, sadly, which explains why no top-flight club would've greenlit it mid-season.
“That said, if we're playing the "who do you think" game and ignoring the obvious debunk, I'd have pegged it as Mykhailo Mudryk from Chelsea.
“His lanky run-up and flair for flashy (but sometimes wayward) dead balls matched the clips floating around X, and he's got that enigmatic vibe where a quick indoor cameo wouldn't shock me.
Mudryk is currently suspended and unable to play for Chelsea or Ukraine after being charged with a doping offence by the FA.
The 24-year-old joined Chelsea in a deal potentially rising to £88million but has been suspended since December 2024 after a urine test provided a positive result for a banned substance.
He was formally charged in June and the FA investigation is ongoing.
