Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has told friends he could be the next Manchester United boss, according to reports, as pressure builds on Amorim

Roberto Mancini has told friends he could be the next Manchester United boss if Ruben Amorim is sacked.

Amorim has been under increasing pressure at Old Trafford - and the Red Devils face a crunch clash with Liverpool, at the weekend, who have also been struggling for form in recent weeks.

However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has come out to defend Amorim in recent interviews. Speaking to the Times' The Business podcast, Sir Jim looked to ease talks on Amorim's future: "He has not had the best of seasons.

"Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That's where I would be.

"The press, sometimes I don't understand. They want overnight success. They think it's a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow.

"You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week."

However, if Sir Jim does decide to change his mind, Mancini has, according to The Sun, told his friends he could be the next Red Devils boss.

Mancini has been out of work after he left the Saudi Arabian role just over one year ago.

However, he is best known for his time at Manchester City - where he delivered their first ever Premier League title in 2012 - when Sergio Aguero turned the title race on its head in the 93rd minute.

Mancini, who is based in the south of France, remains a cult hero at the Erihad.

And some City fans were over the moon to bump into their former boss when they travelled to Monaco for a Champions League clash earlier this month.

Mancini isn't the only name that has been linked to the Red Devils and Gareth Southgate has also emerged as an option for Sir Jim.

While Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has also been linked with the role.
