January transfer window's big 10 Prem signings rated and slated from Rashford to Gonzalez

The January transfer window slammed shut on Monday with Premier League clubs, almost entirely Manchester City, splashing the cash – here are the biggest 10 Prem signings ranked

The winter window is often a chaotic one, and while most of the Premier League’s usual big-spending culprits were quiet, a number of exciting deals were still made.

More than £350million was spent by clubs in England’s top-flight, with the vast majority of that coming from Manchester City as Pep Guardiola threw money at the Blues’ current league position in a luxury that the rest of the league wished they could have followed suit in – whether that be Profitability & Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns or general lack of financial muscle.

Compare the spending to last summer, where Premier League clubs splurged over £1.8billion on transfers, the winter window was a quieter one but some exciting deals that could shape the second half of the season were made.

Marcus Rashford - Man Utd to Aston Villa, loan

The strangest sight from the winter window has to be Manc born and bred Marcus Rashford holding an Aston Villa shirt hours before the deadline.

The 27-year-old has struggled at Manchester United over the past 18 months and a loan move away was necessary after he was frozen out by Ruben Amorim. Villa have a lot to play for and if they can help Rashford return to his form of old, the £40million buy option is a steal.

Abdukodir Khusanov - Lens to Man City, £33.5m

The first of City’s record £180m January outlay, unlike the other names on this list, everyone got a very concerning first impression of Abdukodir Khusanov during his first-half disasterclass against Chelsea.

The initial £33.5m seems good business in the current market for a 20-year-old defender, and by no means are we writing him off after a horrific Premier League debut, but early suggestions aren’t great. The Uzbek also arrived alongside £29.6m 19-year-old Brazilian Vitor Reis in an overhaul of the champion’s backline.

Kevin Danso – Lens to Tottenham, loan

Tottenham were desperate and the way they hijacked Wolves’ move for defender Kevin Danso proved that as Daniel Levy swooped in to secure the 26-year-old on loan from Lens for the rest of the season and with an obligation to buy of £20.9m.

Danso was a regular in the Lens side before a move away in January looked inevitable. Once a Southampton fringe player during the 2019/20 season, Danso has come a long way but does he have the quality to displace Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven when the pair are back to full fitness, we doubt it.

Therefore, the obligation fee could get awkward if he proves to be another flop, especially after he failed a medical at Juventus just days before. This has all the hallmarks of a January panic buy.

Donyell Malen - Borussia Dortmund to Aston Villa, £21.1m

Aston Villa’s busy winter window saw them snap up versatile forward Donyell Malen for what appears to be a bargain £21.1m, especially after they sold youngster Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town for marginally less.

The 26-year-old arrives with an exciting reputation having scored 94 goals across 248 games for Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven. Adding quality and experience to the ranks ahead of a demanding second half of the season could make Malen one of the signings of the window.
