Shocked fans looked on in horror as the masked wrestler plummeted to the floor when the railing he was stood on appeared to give way as he attempted a spectacular dive from the balcony

A Mexican wrestler has narrowly avoided death after falling from a balcony when a high-flying move went wrong. The unnamed Luchador is seen standing on a folded mattress behind the handrail during what appears to be an outdoor match.

In the brief clip, the mattress gives way as he is about to leap onto two opponents that are stood on the floor, which is covered by a mat. As he prepares to jump towards them, he instead falls from the balcony onto the floor below.

He narrowly misses a dog which was sitting on the floor as a small crowd looks on in horror and his fellow wrestlers rush over to check on his well-being.

The clip was shared on a Facebook page named Guerrero Jaguar making light of the stunt. One fan wrote: "I don't know why I imagine you so extreme..."

Another said: "Unexpected ending", while a third commented: "Don't be a Sucker." Meanwhile an Instagram user joked: "Better than the Royal Rumble." Another said: "All for a Coke and some tacos," a reference to the paltry pay on the independent scene."

One fan quipped: "Bro Swanton bombed the dog" And another joked: "That's a shoot railing....went into business for itself." Someone else shared concern for the wrestler's safety, telling him: "You're going to kill yourself, dude!!!"

It is not clear when or where the clip was taken, but it appears to be in Mexico. All the wrestlers in shot are wearing masks, which are a key part of Lucha Libre culture in the wrestling-mad country.

Masks have been used dating back to the beginnings of Lucha Libre in the early part of the 20th century and have a historical significance to Mexico in general, dating to the days of the Aztec era.

Early masks were very simple with basic colors to distinguish the wrestler but modern masks are colorfully designed to evoke the images of animals, gods, ancient heroes and other archetypes, whose identity the luchador takes on during a performance.

Almost all wrestlers in Mexico will start their careers wearing masks, though some later wrestle without one, such as WWE star Rey Myserio Jr, who has wrestled with and without a "hood".

Masked luchadores often go to extremes to conceal their true identities and legendary Mexican star El Santo continued wearing his mask after retirement, revealing his face only briefly in old age and was eventually buried wearing his silver mask.
