A women's football team from the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been slammed online after a video went viral of them chasing the referee after they disagreed with a decision

A football club from the Democratic Republic of the Congo has gone viral after they chased a referee for failing to award them a penalty during a match.

The incident occurred between female team DC Motema Pembe and Mazembehas, while DC Motema Pembe were trailing 5-1. Pembe players were left irate when they believed the penalty had been missed, causing the comedic scenes.

The referee can be seen trying to escape the players, and she looks to take shelter off the side of the pitch. However, the women are able to catch up with the referee - unloading kicks and punches.

One fan said: "They should be banned for life, no one will try it again!"

"There is nothing funny about this. This is utterly shameful," a second added. While a third tweeted: "Lee Mason & all other PGMOL deserve this," in reference to recent events that saw Brentford's equaliser stand against Arsenal.

And a fourth tweeted: "The players involved in this barbaric act should be fined and banned from playing football by the appropriate superior authority. This is unacceptable and it is against soccer ethics!"

Local reports suggest the DR Congo Football Association has suspended some Pembe players for their involvement in the viral video.

Reports also suggest a separate investigation has been opened into the events, to see if any severe punishment is needed.
