UK's first WAG 'blew money like toilet paper' and is now £500,000 in debt

Suzi Walker's status as a 'WAG' was so famous, she ended up inspiring the character of Chardonnay in noughties drama Footballers' Wives, but the 50-year-old's life is very different now

Britain’s first WAG Suzi Walker admitted medical bills and huge legal costs have now left her £500,000 in debt, years after spending money like it was “toilet paper”.

The 52-year-old was once married to ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Ian Walker and former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan. Walker’s extravagant lifestyle began when Walker was called up to the England squad in the 1990s, opening the door to lucrative shopping opportunities with the likes of Victoria Beckham, Coleen Rooney, and many more.

Nearly thirty years later, crippling medical bills and a very costly court case has resulted in Walker needing to pawn her own jewellery, clothes, and other items of value she used to own.

She told The Sun: “Ending up around half a million in debt and not having the money I once had has changed me as a human being. I now know more than ever what’s important in life.”

The former Page 3 girl is living a very different life compared to the one she was used to. After her husband Ian was called up to the England squad, she became good friends with Coleen, Alex, and Victoria when their husbands Wayne, Steven, and David were on Three Lions duty.

During Euro 1996, Walker admitted they would "spend thousands at Gucci and Prada" and only drank "the finest Cristal Champagne". They also spontaneously swapped luxury watches for "Cartier diamond-encrusted" timepieces.

Ian may have only made four appearances for the Three Lions, but it still enabled him to treat Walker like a princess. He marked his call-up with a "beautiful, pear-shaped diamond," triggering a spectacular life of huge spending.

“I had fake tan, I had my boobs made bigger, smaller, then bigger again — I can’t even remember how many I had but I think they cost about £8,000 each time," Walker added. If she did not fancy doing the dirty work, Walker even admitted to having a "personal shopper at Selfridges".

Fast forward almost three decades, the former Page 3 girl’s life has been turned upside down by a chronic illness which went undiagnosed for many years and left her with enormous medical bills of up to £60,000. Her current husband Mark Pitman also had to shell out £600,000 in legal fees two years ago, in a bid to recoup million he claimed a company owed him in fees.

“I knew I was dying, but I couldn’t get a diagnosis from my local hospital,” Walker added, when asked about her health problems. “I paid to get private tests. I’ve been so ill that I’ve barely been able to look at the post. I was ignoring calls from the mortgage company, and the house is in my name." She revealed she nows owes around £20,000 and was even threatened with repossession of her house.

“It’s amazing my electricity and other things haven’t been cut off," she also said. Those medical tests found she was suffering from a rare and chronic variant of Lyme disease called Babesiosis. It is a condition which has also led to her suffering from meningitis, brain inflammation and discharge from behind her eyes.

“The clinic has literally saved my life because I was put straight on to some very strong drugs to help reduce the inflammation in my brain and body, and I was on IV drips daily. I’ve no idea how it got this chronic."
