Teacher who had sex with boy learns her fate as victim's mum says 'how dare you'
Bridgeport High School teacher Courtney Rankin has been sentenced after pleading guilty to having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, including acts inside her home
A female teacher who had sex with a 17-year-old student has managed to avoid prison time despite admitting her sick crimes. The victim's mum addressed the disgraced teacher in court, asking her "how dare you?".
Courtney Rankin, a former Bridgeport High School teacher in West Virginia, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to the charges back in October. She admitted having intercourse with the pupil at her apartment between 10 and 15 times after he "began communicating with [Rankin] in class", and that it "led to a relationship outside of school," according to the complaint.
During a police interview with the Marion County Sheriff's Department, the victim told officers he was sexually abused by Rankin who "was the victim's teacher at Bridgeport High School," deputies said. It comes after an ex-teacher pleaded guilty to having intercourse with five students, having a child by one of them.
The boy added the sexual abuse happened at Rankin's residence in Fairmont "10-15 times".
Speaking with Rankin on May 20, deputies said "she voluntarily provided similar details of the incidents" and "confirmed that the relationship started during this school year".
She added "the victim would come to her apartment and the two of them would engage in sexual intercourse," officers said.
During her sentencing on Monday, Rankin said she accepted responsibility and was remorseful. The court was presented with letters from 14 character witnesses in support of Rankin including from her doctor, mum and former co-worker.
Despite the alarming nature of her crimes Judge Patrick Wilson sentenced Rankin to one to five years of home confinement on the condition that it be arranged at her home in Pennsylvania. She must pay a $1,000 fine.
Rankin will have to do 20 hours of community service per week for the duration of her sentence and will be required to register as a sex offender for life. She will be subject to 10 years of supervised probation after release.
A pre-sentence investigation found Rankin is not likely to reoffend and is not a danger to society. It also took into account her claim of being a victim of domestic violence and being diagnosed with PTSD.
The victim's mum gave a tearful statement to the court, asking for the maximum sentence. She said in part: "To you Courtney, how dare you?"
