Six greatest title comebacks of all-time as Arsenal need miracle to win Premier League

Many sides of years gone by can offer Arsenal some hope their Premier League title charge isn't done and dusted just yet - despite their damning defeat to Manchester City

Arsenal need a minor miracle to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title following their 4-1 thrashing at the Etihad - but stranger things have happened.

While Pep Guardiola's City side are perhaps the best team ever seen in British football, no one is immune to a slip up, which is what Mikel Arteta and his players must hope they do in their remaining seven games of the season.

If that were to happen, the Gunners need to claim maximum points in their final five outings. Daily Star Sport is here to offer their frustrated fans that glimmer of hope by looking at the greatest title comebacks of all-time.

Arsenal fans can maybe take some solace from the fact they've been behind and fought back to win the title before under Arsene Wenger.

They were 11 points adrift of Manchester United in 1998, albeit with a trio of games in hand on their great rivals. They claimed victory in all three.

But the decisive win was beating Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a late Marc Overmars goal.

As a result, they clinched the title with two games to spare and could afford to lose their final outings at Liverpool and Aston Villa.

It seems forever since a team other than Bayern Munich came out on top in the Bundesliga, but Borussia Dortmund could finally end their 10-year dominance this season.

They were also the last club to pip Bayern to top spot, despite losing three of their first six games.

After that torrid opening, they went undefeated for the rest of the season to chase down what was at worst an eight-point gap.

It wasn't often the case that Fergie's side were chasing the title, but they found themselves a staggering 12 points behind Kevin Keegan's Newcastle.

The season looked to be over in January - but they pulled off the Prem's greatest comeback in the second half of the season.

Despite Alan Hansen claiming "you'll never win anything with kids", United motored while Newcastle went on a shocking run of two wins in eight games.

That sparked Keegan to memorably rant "I'd love it if we beat them", and they ultimately came out an agonising second best.

Fast forward seven years and United were once again faced with a near impossible task. This time they had eight points to close to reigning champs Arsenal.

They did what they could control and went on an unbeaten run from Boxing Day until the end of the season.

Wenger's Gunners, meanwhile, crumbled with just four wins in their final nine matches. That meant United secured not only the title, but also a mega 13-point swing.

Real Madrid were way out in front at the top of the La Liga table in 2004, at one point holding a 12-point lead which looked to be insurmountable.

A Galaticos side featuring Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Luis Figo and Iker Casillas surely couldn't mess that up, right?

Well, they won just three of their final 12 games, leaving Valencia to storm through out of nowhere to cruise to the title under Rafa Benitez.

Understandably, everyone remembers the 2011/12 Prem season for what happened at the end of it - but Sergio Aguero's epic title-winning goal would never have happened had United not slipped up big time.

With only six games to go Sir Alex's usually ruthless side made a right pigs ear of their run-in, losing away to Wigan and drawing 4-4 with Everton at Old Trafford.

Those results, combined with City's 1-0 derby win at the Etihad in both sides' third to last game of the campaign, vanquished what was an eight-point lead.
