Pengate II as King Charles' 'rueful expression' shows unhappiness at Coronation signing
EXCLUSIVE: King Charles III's Coronation took place at Westminster Abbey today in front of Queen Camilla, Prince William, Kate Middleton and the watching world, and his issues with pens came to the fore once again
King Charles was less-than-happy during one moment of today's Coronation that resembled the most infamous talking point days after the death of his mother the-late Queen.
Shortly after the death of the Queen, the King was in Northern Ireland on September 13, signing the guest book at Hillsborough Castle when his pen began to leak on him, causing him to get up and walk out.
He was vocal with his frustrations, declaring: "Oh God I hate this. I can't bear this bloody thing! [It's] what they do every stinking time".
Camilla could be heard adding: "Oh look it's going everywhere", before she signed the guest book herself.
However, a calligraphy expert said at the time that his frustrations are more to do with the way the monarch holds his pen.
And it seems that, during a moment bearing a striking resemblance to what was labelled as Pengate, his issues are still going on.
During the Coronation, the King had to sign a declaration, alongside Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Wellby.
It appeared that the pair were having some kind of private joke based on the pen he was using, according to The Face Whisperer Adrianne Carter.
She said: “As the bible is presented to the King, he looks a bit teary-eyed. As the Archbishop is talking we see the King take a big gulp.. As he says I am willing we see him show a nervous facial expression.
“It could be nerves about the proceedings and not about being King.
“We see a slight side eye and smirk from the king to the archbishop at the end of the declaration – a private joke?
“Did something happened in rehearsals?”
However, despite the joke, King Charles' pen frustrations came to fruition again as he could not hide his unhappiness.
Adrianne added: “More Pengate as the King signs, we see him pull a few rueful expressions as if he's not happy with the pen or ink.”
Let's hope none of the Coronation guests bought the King a fountain pen as a gift.
