One explanation could be that the odd-looking beams of light are Starlink satellites but there were no launches during the first sighting in South America

A series of unusual looking 'lighting rods' captured in the skies above South America have left UFO experts completely stumped.

The strange shots of light, that some have likened to UFO sightings, have been compared to luminous 'rods' over countries like Argentina, Brazil and Chile as they are spotted within days of each other by various onlookers.

But experts are baffled as to whether the objects are indeed UFOs or if there is a simpler explanation, like the frequent sightings of Starlink launches, a satellite constellation that uses the Earth's orbit to deliver broadband internet.

It comes as some of the sightings have been compared by witnesses to a string of lights in the sky or shooting stars. Similar sightings across the UK and beyond have in the past been confirmed as launches of Starlink. The satellites can appear as a string of pearls or a "train" of bright lights moving across the night sky.

One stunning example of the unexplained South American phenomenon was filmed last month, on April 29, by a UFO researcher. Rony Vernet captured striking scenes above Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, reports Mail Online.

A vibrant object comes into view and gradually moves out of sight over the next one to two minutes of him witnessing the beam of light. But it hasn't been the only sighting of its nature in recent times.

Within a couple of days of each other earlier this month, three witnesses filmed a similar-looking object moving through the sky in Chile, Argentina and then near the border of Uruguay. The first witness filmed a white object above their house with their phone on May 6.

At around 7pm on that same day a witness recorded a similar site although with a more blue hue in Chile. Two days later, on May 8, a resident of a Brazilian town near Uruguay filmed another appearing to change colour from white to blue and yellow.

Chris Spitzer, an expert in UFO analysis said that Starlink generally appears as a trail of dots in the sky although can at times appear as a solid line if the satellites are near to one another. He said: "'Starlink satellites also generate UFO sightings right after they are deployed, when they reflect sunlight."

This is believed to be the only possible explanation for the sightings, however, there was no Starlink launch on April 29 when the initial sighting was captured.
