Meet Ruben Amorim – Man Utd's 'new boss' who 'snubbed' Liverpool and Man City
Manchester United are closing in on Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim after sacking Erik ten Hag following a terrible start to the Premier League season
Manchester United have made Sporting Lisbon manager Bruno Amorim their top target to replace Erik ten Hag who was sacked on Monday.
The Red Devils decided to pull the plug on the Dutchman who spent two and a half years at Old Trafford after a disastrous start to the season with just four wins in their opening 13 games in all competitions. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been placed in temporary charge, but United have wasted no time in moving for a permanent target with Amorim who has 'agreed' to become their new boss.
United are currently negotiating a compensation package to bring him to the club immediately, with the club keen to make their move quickly amid interest from Manchester City who view him as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola. It's not the first time Amorim has flirted with a move to England with arch rivals Liverpool and West Ham both keen on his services in the past too.
The 39-year-old has had a remarkable rise to becoming one of Europe's best young managers. He spent nine years playing for Sporting's rivals Benfica before a career-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury at 29 put him on a path to management.
He was initially inspired by former United manager Jose Mourinho's success at Porto, Inter and Chelsea and even completed an internship under the special one. Despite this, he has tactically grown to play a high-intensity, possession-based system using a fluid 3-4-3 formation.
Amorim's stylish tactics translate off the pitch, too, with the boss often standing out for his well-dressed look on the touchline. Unlike outgoing boss Ten Hag who liked to keep a smart look often donning a suit and tie, Amorim keeps things casual. He will certainly give both Guardiola and Mikel Arteta a run for their money and likes to pair jeans or chinos with a trendy sweatshirt and trainers.
In his four years at Sporting, he has restored them to the top of Portuguese football for the first time in almost two decades. He guided the club to a league and cup double in 2021 and led them to another title last season.
Sporting are also the only team in Europe's top leagues with a 100% win rate this campaign conceding just two goals in the process. While he may not have experience managing in the Premier League, his credentials can't be doubted.
Outside of football, he married stunning wife Maria Joao Diogo in 2013 who has football connections of her own. Maria's brother Antero Henrique was famously a sporting director at Paris Saint-Germain and was reportedly a target for the role at Old Trafford a few years ago.
Henrique was the mastermind behind Neymar's world-record move from Barcelona to the French capital and initially persuaded Kylian Mbappe to stay at the club before he left for Real Madrid.
It's United's current director Dan Ashworth who has identified Amorim as the latest man supposedly capable of bringing glory back to United though. Many have tried before, and most have failed spectacularly, but maybe this time it will finally work.
