Man Utd 'set to ditch Mason Greenwood from squad' after huge backlash from fans

Nearly nine months after charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control against him were dropped, Manchester United are reportedly coming to a decision on the future of Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood is set to be dumped by Manchester United after a furious backlash from supporters, according to reports.

In February, the former England international saw the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) drop charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour against him. The CPS said "the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light" resulted in there no longer being "a realistic prospect of conviction".

Despite the decision, United carried out their own internal investigation into the matter and recently asked fans for "patience" so they could "work through the final stages" of their process.

However, after months of deliberating, it appears they have come to their decision.

According to the Sun, United will jettison Greenwood from the squad. An apparent willingness on the club's part to re-integrate him into the team is said to have led to some members of United staff "considering striking" or "quitting the club".

Reports on United's potential move to reinstate the young forward as part of their playing squad also received an enormous backlash from supporters, particularly on social media where key groups such as the Manchester United's Women's Supporters' Club condemned the suggested decision.

The player was still barred from United's Carrington Training Ground while they were pondering on a decision. United also stated the decision to bring Greenwood back into the fold or not lay with chief executive officer Richard Arnold.

It was also previously reported that Arnold had pre-recorded an explanation into how the club had reached a decision to allow Greenwood back. However, this does not appear to be the case anymore.

It is currently unclear what the next steps will be when it comes to dealing with the forward's future. He is currently being paid £75,000 a week by the club as per a contract which runs until 2025.

It's possible they may look to loan him out to another club, but no offers are believed to have been made for the 21-year-old.
