Man Utd make Victor Lindelof decision as Erik ten Hag battles injury crisis

Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof has enjoyed a resurgence over the last month and the Red Devils are keen to retain his services beyond next summer

Manchester United have decided to take up an option to extend Victor Lindelof’s contract by a year.

The Swede is approaching the final 12 months on his current deal and, to avoid selling him on the cheap this summer, the Reds instead plan to trigger the clause that keeps him at the club until June 2025.

Lindelof, 28, cost £32million six years ago when then-United boss Jose Mourinho signed him from Portuguese outfit Benfica.

A succession of injury problems have hampered his progress at Old Trafford - and gradually resulted in him dropping down the defensive pecking order

But recently Lindelof, capped 59 times by Sweden, has found himself back in favour with Erik ten Hag, courtesy a severely-depleted Reds’ rearguard.

And having scored the winning penalty in United’s FA Cup semi-final shoot-out victory over Brighton last Sunday, it now seems he will be staying for another year at least.

Dutch coach Ten Hag is impressed by Lindelof’s versatility - he can operate as a centre-half and full-back - along with his exemplary attitude even when out of the first-team picture.

That makes him a valuable squad asset as he has proved in the last month. His 152nd league appearances for the club came in Thursday’s 2-2 draw at Tottenham.

Whatever happens during the final weeks of the campaign, United will only consider selling Lindelof in the next window if they receive an offer close to their original outlay on him.
