Man dead and 15 injured after horror train collision in Wales
One man has died after a low-speed crash between two trains in Wales, with a further 15 passengers taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, British Transport Police have said
One man has been confirmed dead after two trains collided in Mid-Wales, British Transport Police have announced. The devastating incident occurred in Llanbrynmair, Powys just before 7:30pm.
The collision involved the Transport for Wales service departing from Shrewsbury at 6.31pm bound for Aberystwyth and the 7.09pm service travelling from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. Network Rail and Transport for Wales have confirmed that the line is currently out of action.
They stated, "Our main priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues, and we are doing all we can to support the emergency services as they respond to the incident. We would encourage passengers to plan ahead and check journeys before travelling via National Rail Enquiries."
One witness on board said the driver ran inside carriages to tell everyone to 'brace' as he could do nothing to avoid the impending collision. Jonah Evans, 25, said there were a few injuries on board and one person was airlifted due to a suspected heart attack.
He added: “There was a train that was stopped and the other train couldn’t stop. And the driver couldn’t get out the way with a train in front.
“The driver ran in and sat on a chair and said brace yourselves - we’re about to hit a train. Someone lost their teeth, cracked ribs. Because the driver told us it was happening, we could kind of get ready.”
The British Transport Police released a statement saying, "Officers were called to the line near Llanbrynmair at 7.29pm to reports of a low-speed train collision involving two trains."
Emergency responders, including firefighters, ambulance crews, and the air ambulance team, were on site to attend to any injuries. Initially thought to have caused only minor injuries with fifteen passengers taken to hospital, it has now been confirmed that the collision has resulted in one fatality, reports Wales Online.
Pictures from the scene reveal the extent of the devastation, with one train carriage completely crushed due to the force of the collision, even at a low speed. Additional photos show emergency services still present several hours after the initial impact, securing the area and investigating the incident while ensuring all passengers and staff were taken care of.
The identity of the victim has not been disclosed yet, but their family has been notified, according to a police statement. BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan confirmed: "We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening's incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted and specialist officers continue to provide support.
He said the BTP are working hand in hand with emergency services and the rail industry " He stated that the BTP are working closely with emergency services and the rail industry "to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision".
He further added: "Residents will see an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result."
