Premier League champions Man City have been dealt a serious blow to their hopes of retaining the title with star man Kevin De Bruyne being ruled out with a "serious" injury just one game into the season

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out for several months with a "serious" injury.

The Belgian playmaker limped off the field during City's 3-0 win over Burnley in their opening fixture of the Premier League season. He lasted just 23 minutes before being replaced by summer signing Mateo Kovacic.

It was a repeat of the same hamstring issue that saw him taken off during the Champions League final victory over Inter Milan. De Bruyne left the pitch in tears in Istanbul in what would go on to be the side's greatest ever night in Europe.

And now the reigning English champions have suffered a potential blow to their title hopes with the 32-year-old being sidelined and needing surgery.

Speaking in his press conference, manager Pep Guardiola said: “Kevin De Bruyne’s injury is serious one. He will be out for a few months.

"We have to decide in the next days on surgery but for sure we lose Kevin for some time. Surgery is surgery, three or four months out."

Asked whether De Bruyne will see Dr Ramon Cugat, Guardiola said: "He saw the images, saw them personally. Two or three doctors had the same opinion..."

De Bruyne revealed in an on-pitch interview with BT Sport after the win in Istanbul that he had been struggling with his hamstring for some months.

The five-time Premier League champion and club doctors had sought to manage his minutes by using him sparingly ahead of the crucial stage of the season, which eventually paid off but at a huge long-term cost.

De Bruyne told Des Kelly: "It has been a hard two months. I had a lot of problems with my hamstring and it snapped."

He played a decisive role in City's domination last season, making 49 appearances in all competitions. He notched a staggering 31 assists and 10 goals in the process.
