Kim Jong-un demands 50k new homes for starving locals despite cannibalism claims
Kim Jong Un may be ushering a new era with new flats in Pyongyang, but he wouldn't be pleased to know that defectors have shared stories of cannibalism in North Korea
Kim Jong Un has declared that he wants 50,000 homes built to turn Pyongyang into a "wonderful world class city" amid starving locals who have turned to cannibalism to make ends meet.
The North Korean leader "personally planned" to have the flats in the Hwasong area built and has "ceaselessly given brilliant guidance" when it comes to their construction, according to the leader's mouthpiece, the Pyongyang Times. Several senior North Korean officials attended the ceremony to celebrate the plans, as well as military and civilian builders.
However, what the North Korean leader might not be celebrating is information coming to light from the Korean Institute for National Unification, through more than 200 defectors.
It comes as Pyongyang is under fire due to national food reserves being used as a weapon to hold the people hostage. The government also blocks the food that comes from the various humanitarian agencies of the world.
These people testified and admitted that suffering North Koreans were executed - for selling and eating human flesh. Previous reports suggested that cannibalism was present in the country since the end of the late nineties, as a result of a famine which killed nearly two million people.
However, this report included cases until 2011. Two other cases reported by the Institute date from 2006, when father and son were executed after being accused of consuming human flesh.
Not only that, but another case was recorded in 2009, in Hyesan. A man was executed for killing his girlfriend and then eating him. Among the recorded cases of cannibalism caused by starvation is that of a starving man who killed his co-worker, part of whose flesh he ate, while the rest he sold in the local market as mutton.
