Antonio Conte will take charge as Tottenham boss following Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking after the 3-0 defeat to Man United on the weekend, signing an 18-month contract with the north Londoners

Jamie Carragher has claimed new Tottenham manager Antonio Conte will struggle to replicate the same success he achieved at Chelsea.

Conte was in charge of the Blues for two years between July 2016 and July 2018, where he made an instant impact by spectacularly winning the league in his first season after switching to a back-three.

The Italian then joined Inter Milan after a year out, winning another league title in his first season and delivering Inter’s first Scudetto in a decade.

Now, with Conte having been appointed by Spurs on an 18-month contract, pundit Carragher has warned that even his talents may not be enough to get the side immediately challenging for the Premier League.

Carragher said: "I would love Conte back in the Premier League. I think he was a revelation first time around, he is a brilliant character, his personality, I would love to see him back in the Premier League so I hope it does get done."

But the former Liverpool defender believes Conte needs more than his usual one season in charge to get Spurs competing

He added: "I think a manager is going to need more than 18 months to turn Tottenham around and even though I am a huge admirer of Antonio Conte and how quickly... the success he had with Chelsea and every club he has been to... I think it would be very difficult to replicate that success in 18 months.

“I think he could need another 18 months on top of that to maybe get Tottenham back, maybe challenging.

"When I say ’get Tottenham back’, maybe back to where they were under [Mauricio] Pochettino, where they felt they had a chance of winning trophies and pushing people for the title, Champions League year in, year out.

“I think there is a lot of work to be done so, do I think Conte can turn that around in 18 months? I think it will be difficult for a man of his calibre."

Tottenham under Pochettino regularly finished in the top-four and made plunges deep into the Champions League, including a run to the final in 2019.

But the appointment of Jose Mourinho and then Nuno Espirito Santo in the summer has set Spurs back. with the side in need of a rebuild which Carragher believes will take time to achieve.

Carragher said: "I think this squad is capable of challenging for the CL positions and they are not a million miles away from that right now.

“Tottenham as a club should always aspire to be in that position. I think Tottenham maybe not this season but certainly in the future you will be looking at them and thinking ‘oh yeah they can certainly make the Champions League’ because he can make a huge difference as he has shown throughout his career."
