In a move that has left football fans in disbelief, Brighton & Hove Albion look set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Ajax star Mohammed Kudus in a deal worth £40m

Brighton & Hove Albion look set to potentially pull off one of the signings of the summer transfer window after agreeing a £40m deal to sign Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus.

Kudus, who bagged 18 goals in all competitions for Ajax last term, is one of Europe's hottest prospects. The 23-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs across the continent, with a host of Premier League teams thought to have been watching the Ghanaian.

The Athletic's David Ornstein has confirmed the Seagulls have reached an "agreement in principle" to bring Kudus to the south coast, as Brighton continue to ramp up their preparations for arguably the biggest season in their history.

Ornstein tweeted: "EXCL: Brighton & Hove Albion reach agreement in principle with Ajax to buy Mohamed Kudus for ~€40m. 23yo Ghana int’l close to agreement on personal terms. Deal not fully done but key De Zerbi target + would be #BHAFC record signing @TheAthleticFC #Ajax".

One of the clubs thought to have been interested in landing Kudus this summer was Chelsea. Arsenal were also rumoured to be keen on the midfielder too, but it now looks as though Brighton have won the race to sign the Ajax ace.

And it's safe to say football fans across the globe are in a state of shock that Brighton, who qualified for the Europa League last season, are potentially set to bring Kudus to the Amex in the coming days, should he agree to terms with the Seagulls.

One football fan on social media tweeted: "He watched Brighton vs Chelsea and knew what choice to make" referencing the Seagulls rampant 4-1 win over the Blues last year. Another added: "Joao Pedro, Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, and Mohammed Kudus. Brighton will now be playing The Beautiful Game in 4K."

A third commented: "Wow, this came out of NOWHERE from Brighton, but if they can get it done thats a quality signing for them." A fourth wrote: "Ridiculously good signing for Brighton."

And a fifth said: "Brighton beating Arsenal and Chelsea to Kudus, wow fair play." It should be noted Kudus has not yet agreed to personal terms with Brighton, meaning there could be another twist in this transfer tale.

The Seagulls have recruited well this summer in the wake of the departure of Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool. Roberto De Zerbi's side have also added James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud on frees and signed Joao Pedro, Bart Verbruggen and Igor.

Should they land Kudus too, then Brighton will have an incredible opportunity to really attack the Europa League this season, whilst also remaining competitive in the Premier League after impressing so much last term.
