Sarina Wiegman's side were denied a penalty after a VAR check in their World Cup opener against Haiti which many fans felt was a stonewall spot kick

England fans were furious at the Lionesses being denied a "blatant" penalty in their World Cup opener against Haiti.

Chloe Kelly appeared to be fouled in the box inside the opening 20 minutes at the Suncorp Stadium. She received a studs-up challenge on her right shin from defender Dayan Pierre-Louis, who got nowhere near the ball.

Venezuelan referee Emikar Calderas was instructed to review the incident at the VAR monitor. But she decided to not give the spot kick because of an earlier foul by Alessia Russo on Tabita Joseph, although then proceeded to book Pierre-Louis anyway.

One fan took to Twitter and wrote: "Blatant penalty for the ladies that." A second echoed: "Blatant penalty for England woman’s team?"

A third commented: "Chloe Kelly lucky not to get a broken leg there ……penalty for me." And a fourth questioned: "How is that not a penalty on Chloe Kelly? Disgraceful decision."

A fifth argued: "The penalty should have been given for the rake down Kelly’s shin. To give a yellow card and no penalty is bizarre."

Others felt it was the right call, however. One posted on social media: "Right decision for me. Foul by Russo occurred first so no penalty, but it’s still an awful challenge by the Haiti player on Kelly so deservedly booked."

Another added: "Russo made the foul first, so no penalty is the right decision, but that was surely a red for the foul on Kelly?"

The drama didn't stop there, as minutes later Haiti were punished for a handball and England did have the chance to open the scoring from 12 yards out.

Georgia Stanway saw her effort saved by the goalkeeper - but she was adjudged to have encroached by stepping off her line before it was taken, and Stanway duly converted the re-take.
