Law enforcement authorities seized a member of the Sinaloa Cartel in Washington following a two-month investigation, confiscating 5,000 fentanyl pills, golden handguns and three vehicles

A member of the Sinaloa Cartel was arrested in Washington as authorities seized a pair of gold handguns and thousands of pounds worth of drugs.

The suspect, whose name has not been released to the press, was apprehended last week following a two-month investigation in the city of Burien, the King’s County Sheriff’s Office revealed on Tuesday (May 14).

The statement also revealed the individual was in charge of transporting drugs and money for the transnational Sinaloa Cartel, which was founded by the notorious gang leader Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán. Agents reportedly seized three handguns, an AR-15 style short barrel rifle along with £144k ($182k) in cash.

According to the Daily Mail, the drug trafficker had been under surveillance for around 100 hours in the Puget Sound area of Burien.

“Narcotics and firearms wreak havoc on our King County community, stealing futures and leaving behind an ever-lasting impact on families,” the King County Sheriff's Office said. “We are committed to removing these destructive forces from our streets and enhancing safety within our neighbourhoods.”

Police also uncovered 5,000 fentanyl/M-30 pills, 10 grams of cocaine and 2.8 pounds of fentanyl powder, while three vehicles were also seized in the investigation that involved several search warrants.

Just days after the arrest, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) singled out the Sinaloa Cartel and its rival the Jalisco New Generation Cartel for being at the “heart of the synthetic drug crisis” in the United States.

The statement came in DEA’s 2024 National Drug Threat Assessment release, as fears grow around the high-levels of the deadly fentanyl in the drugs trade. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 70% of drug-related deaths in 2022 came from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

“The shift from plant-based drugs, like heroin and cocaine, to synthetic, chemical-based drugs, like fentanyl and methamphetamine, has resulted in the most dangerous and deadly drug crisis the United States has ever faced,” DEA administrator Anne Milgram said.

This comes after El Chapo's sons were said to have carried out grim fentanyl experiments using migrants, dogs and horses.

Investigative journalist Anabel Hernández's new book 'The Secret Story: AMLO and the Sinaloa Cartel' (set to be released later this month) alleges Ivan tested the strength of his fentanyl on Central American migrants in the Mexican city of Culiacán, Infobae reports.

This information was revealed in an interview with Damaso Lopez Serrano, known as El Mini Lic, a high-level operative within the Sinaloa Cartel who surrendered to US authorities in 2017 following a dispute with Los Chapitos.

El Chapo’s son Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, the leader of Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel that emerged after his father's arrest in 2016, is being hunted by Mexican and US authorities.

Along with two of El Chapo's other sons, Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, they are accused of being responsible for the deadly fentanyl flooding into the US.
