Southwest Airlines flight 2494 was taxied back to the terminal after bullets were reported to have struck the right side of the aircraft as it prepared for departure

Police have responded to reports of a shooting at an airport as a bullet hit the side of a plane as it got ready for take-off with passengers aboard.

Officers were called to Dallas Love Field Airport, just northwest of downtown Dallas in the United States, on Friday (November 15) night at around 9.48pm local time in an emergency response. Gunshots were reported with a single bullet striking a plane, reports NBC 5. No shooter has been located as of early on Saturday (November 16) morning.

It is understood the plane was getting ready for departure from Dallas to Indianapolis at the time and police have confirmed, following an early investigation, that the aircraft was hit by a gunshot.

No injuries have been reported and the Southwest Airline flight 2494 was taxied safely back to the terminal where passengers departed and it was removed from service.

The airline said: "Southwest will accommodate our customers on another flight. Law enforcement authorities have been notified and the plane has been removed from service."

In a statement shared to X, Dallas Love Field Airport said: "On Friday night, Dallas police responded to a security incident involving a commercial aircraft at Dallas Love Field Airport. Runway 13R/31L was briefly closed but has since reopened. No injuries were reported, and there was minimal impact on airport operations."

It is not yet clear how many people were aboard the plane at the time or how much damage the aircraft sustained.
