Brits to melt in scorching 30C heatwave as fans in the UK fly off supermarket shelves
Summer is finally here with the UK set to bathe in glorious 30C heat, forecasts predict, but it has come at a heavy cost for the nation's supermarket fan supplies
Fans have been flying off the shelves ahead of a predicted 30C heatwave.
Sales are soaring alongside temperatures, with the Met Office expecting a mini heatwave to hit Britain by this time next week.
After the mercury reached around 21C this weekend, it will now get increasingly hotter as each day passes.
And forward-thinking folk are making sure they are prepared by stocking up on cooling devices to beat the heat for when it truly does arrive.
DIY giant Toolstation said sales of powered fans have surged by 213% in the past week alone.
The brand has also seen a rise in the purchase of builder's shorts, T-shirts and watering cans. Lawnmower purchases are also up, rising by 37%, compared to the same time last year.
Sarah Gale, from Toolstation, said: “With the nation strapping in for a scorcher, it’s little surprise that they are looking for ways to keep cool. Demand for fans and air cooling devices have seen big increases in the past week.
Brits have also forked out more on camping and caravan sites around the country and expenditure in golf and football centres was up 16 percent compared to the same time last year.
Barclaycard’s Marc Petticoat said: “This uplift in trade will be some welcome news for the hospitality sector, amidst the ongoing strain of rising energy bills and the impact of the cost of living.”
