Brits issued fresh quad-demic warning ahead of hospital visits this winter
NHS officials have taken another step to protect patients from an onslaught of illness in the so-called quad-demic, with many hospitals bringing back mandatory masks
The NHS has ramped up its visitor precautions in hospital amid fears the so-called quad-demic which could sweep through out the UK.
Winter brings a variety of illnesses to the country and flu appears to be back with a vengeance this year, with the number of patients in hospital with the virus tripling in just two weeks. This peak seems to have come earlier this year, and the heath service are trying to take action to stop the spread in its tracks.
Flu is not the only issue patients are facing, with other winter bugs being thrown into the mix. High rates of Covid, vomiting bug norovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have been worrying doctors and nurses. With the peak happening just before Christmas, these bugs are expected to increase even further.
Reports from the UK Health Security Agency show that hospitalisations from flu increased from 1.8 per 100,000 toward the end of November to 5.53 in the week ending December 8. In response, hospitals are expected to re-introduce masks onto the wards, an action not taken since the pandemic.
Lincolnshire was the first county to introduce these measures. The United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: "The additional infection prevention and control measure is being re-introduced in some high-risk areas due to an increase in respiratory illnesses such as Covid-19, Influenza A and RSV in the county's hospitals and community settings."
These measures are particularly strict in areas where cancer patients and children are resting. Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust have asked parents to only attend hospital if their child is really unwell.
"We are seeing a high number of patients with flu currently," they wrote on an online post. "If you do need to attend our emergency department with your child, please do wear a face mask to protect yourself, other families and our teams caring for patients."
It appears other counties are following suit, with South Warwickshire, Humber, Yorkshire and Bristol just being a few of the trusts to tell patients online they might be required to wear a "hospital style" mask on entrance. This is the latest update after the NHS warned of a huge "tidal wave" of flu ahead of the festive period.
Several doctors have warned of concern, as it appears to be sweeping across GPs and hospitals.
