Dorset Police has announced that although investigation into the deaths of two children near Bournemouth Pier is in the early stages, early findings indicate that no one was hit by any form of vessel

New updates following the tragic deaths of a 12-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy at Bournemouth Pier have suggested that no one was hit by a jet ski or boat.

The news comes after two children lost their lives in the water near Bournemouth Pier yesterday (May 31).

A rescue operation was launched at 4.30pm and saw a total of eight additional people, all thought to be children, pulled from the water.

Investigating police forces have said that “early investigation” has found no one pulled from the water came into “physical contact” with any kind of vessel, despite early speculation.

Police said at a later press conference there was no suggestion a jet ski was involved, nor that people were jumping from the pier.

In a statement issued by Dorset Police, a spokesperson said: “We continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident that occurred yesterday resulting in the deaths of a 12-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy.

“We are working with partner agencies to understand what has caused the tragedy.”

They continued: “However, early investigation indicates that there was no physical contact between a vessel and any swimmers at the time of the incident.

“We are investigating the circumstances that caused a number of swimmers to get into difficulty.

“Further information will be released as the investigation progresses.”

The force yesterday said that a man in his 40s had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and an investigation by detectives is underway.

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Corrigan, of Dorset Police, said in a statement yesterday: “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the young people who tragically died and we are doing all we can to support their families.

“I understand the beach was very busy at the time of the incident and I would ask anyone with information that may assist our enquiries to please come forward.

“We are at the early stages of our investigation and would ask people not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Eyewitnesses recalled seeing people being pulled from the water by lifeguards with two air ambulances also spotted, with some being given CPR on the beach.

A police cordon remains in place.
