Barnsley's new home strip has been dubbed the most vile kit of all time thanks to its bizarre design - which also pays homage to one of their worst ever seasons

Barnsley's new home kit, which has been dubbed the worst kit of all time by fans, appears to be a homage to a miserable campaign.

The Tykes' official kit announcement on Thursday morning (June 29) was posted with the tagline 'redefining tradition' which had supporters asking: "What tradition?"

Sponsored by US Mobile and designed by Puma, the red and white home strip features three stars on each side of the chest - reminiscent of their 1989/90 kit in which they finished 19th in the third tier and had three different managers.

Although the stars on the away kit are less prominent and the black third kit has been positively received, one fan pointed out: "The stars kit was appalling first time around, it made us a laughing stock..."

Another reply said: "That has got to be one of the worst kits you’ll ever see. What a stinker, that bad it could be a prank?"

A third social media user added: "That is one of the worst kits I have ever seen… Someone has got them stars on paint and stretched them out well too far."

A fourth continued: "That home kit actually might be the worst kit I’ve ever seen." A fifth agreed: "Jesus H Christ. Unlucky Barnsley fans, that is vile."

The club are yet to respond to the overwhelmingly negative response to their new kit, which comes as fans need a boost after their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the League One play-off final.

In a further blow, boss Michael Duff has since left the club to takeover at Swansea City in the Championship - with his replacement not yet in the building.

The club say the kit is an "exciting" collaboration with designer Colm Dillane from Kid Super and their director Julie Anne Quay in partnership with Puma.

On their official website, they said: "Drawing inspiration from the rich history of Barnsley FC, the design process began with an in-depth exploration of the club's badge, previous shirts, and overall heritage.

"Among the various iconic kits throughout the years, the "Shaw Carpets" kit from the 1989/1990 season stood out for its distinctive appearance and significance as Barnsley FC entered a momentous decade."

They add that the partnership shows their commitment to innovation, creativity, and pushing boundaries - but might just push fans away from the club shop.
