Arsenal stuck at airport as storm delays flight to Champions League tie

Mikel Arteta was meant to hold a pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal's visit to Lens on Monday evening but it has since been cancelled due to the Gunners being stuck at Luton Airport

The Arsenal squad have been left stuck at Luton Airport ahead of their Champions League tie due to storms causing a flight delay.

Mikel Arteta's men were expecting to travel to France to take on Lens in their second group stage game of the competition. The match is scheduled to take place at 8pm UK time on Tuesday.

But a storm in the surrounding areas of Luton Airport has disrupted the Gunners' plans, with their flight to northern France being delayed. Arteta's pre-match press conference at 6pm Monday was cancelled as a result.

The Arsenal manager is now expected to conduct his presser over the phone, where he will provide an update regarding the fitness of several of his players. However, the time has not yet been confirmed ahead of their first Champions League away match for over six years

Despite the press conference cancellation being out of their control, the north Londoners could face a warning from governing body UEFA. It comes after Newcastle were punished two weeks ago for still being in the air when their presser at the San Siro was scheduled to begin.

Article 73 of UEFA's regulations states clubs must hold a press conference between noon and 8pm the day before a game, which Newcastle could not do as they only landed at 8pm. The Magpies were able to avoid further punishment.

Arteta will hope that Monday's travel complications haven't unsettled his players ahead of their first Champions League game since the 4-0 win over PSV last month. Arsenal are currently in fine form, coming off the back of another 4-0 win over Bournemouth on the weekend.
