'Arne Slot's Liverpool honeymoon is over – AC Milan will test his refusal to rotate'

Arne Slot is refusing to change his approach or make wholesale changes, despite the dual challenge of domestic and European football dawning on him. So he will either live or die by his sword

Arne Slot's marriage to Liverpool has at least lasted longer than the one basketball legend Dennis Rodman had with Carmen Electra.

But considering Rodman's ended inside nine days, Slot won't be singing from the rooftops. And following Liverpool's shock defeat to Nottingham Forest last weekend, it's also safe to assume Slot's honeymoon period is over.

Liverpool tasted defeat in a home league game just once last season, and it took until April for that to happen. But more than a month before Halloween, Slot has experienced first hand how losing at Anfield can send tremors across the red half of Merseyside.

Forest won at Anfield for the first time since man landed on the moon. And you'd have to be from a different planet to regard the performance and result as acceptable.

Which makes tonight's clash with AC Milan in the Champions League take on more significance. And this isn't a mediocre Premier League side Slot will have to bounce back against.

The Rossoneri are one of the most storied teams in European history. The club, ironically, that threatened to inflict Liverpool's greatest ever European humiliation back in 2005, when they lead 3-0 in the Champions League final.

The Italian giants finished second in Serie A last season, and are regarded as one of the emerging forces in the competition. Like Liverpool with six European Cup wins, Milan are true continental royalty. They have gone one better than the Reds by winning the trophy seven times and the San Siro is not a place for the feint hearted.

All of the above adds to the pressure building on Slot as he continues the demanding challenge of following in Jurgen Klopp's footsteps. Klopp led Liverpool to three finals, winning one of them, and boasted a proud European record during his time in charge.

It felt like Forest boss Nuno Santo outthought Slot last weekend. His team stifled Liverpool, before biding their time to punish them with pace and width in the second half.

Yet Slot is refusing to change his approach or make wholesale changes, despite the dual challenge of domestic and European football dawning on him. So he will either live or die by his sword, because losing games is not part of Liverpool's DNA.

And on the occasion of his 46th birthday, Slot will either return from Milan in the mood to celebrate, or drown his sorrows, safe in the knowledge managing Liverpool is in a different league altogether compared to bossing Feyenoord.
