Thomas Tuchel on Man Utd shortlist as ex-Chelsea boss lined up to replace Erik ten Hag
Thomas Tuchel is back on Manchester United's radar as the club consider sacking Erik ten Hag, who is set for crunch talks with the club in the next few days
Manchester United have reportedly got their sights set on nabbing Thomas Tuchel as a potential replacement for the current gaffer, Erik ten Hag.
Tuchel's been in the Red Devils' crosshairs since summer when they mulled over giving Ten Hag the boot, and now with Tuchel kicking his heels after leaving Bayern Munich, United could turn to the German.
The higher-ups at United are set to discuss Ten Hag's future in London this Tuesday."So I don't have any idea that is different," Ten Hag remarked about his future after the dull Aston Villa stalemate, "because they should have told me. We communicate very open, very transparent.
"I speak continuously with them and just after the game I have to do my job, talk with the players, manage the players and answer questions from you. We always talk. Every week, I would say every day we talk, so I expect I will speak with them."
Pressure is mounting on Ten Hag after their poor start to the season, with the Red Devils sitting at 14th in the table having snagged a mere three wins from 11.
With only five goals in seven league matches to their name, even 19th-placed Saints have rustled up more. Plus, the squad's already trailing by seven points from the coveted fourth spot for Champions League qualification, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The club hasn't missed out on Europe's top-tier comp back-to-back since making their grand re-entrance back in '93.
Tuchel had a secret summer rendezvous with United's Sir Jim Ratcliffe about potentially taking the managerial reins. When Ratcliffe was quizzed by the BBC on Friday, he played it coy, saying, "I don't want to answer that question" about his faith in Ten Hag.
But rumours suggest the real power belongs to head honchos Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth, who both officially jumped aboard in July, too late to have any say on Ten Hag's fate.
Despite his "none whatsoever" claim last month, Ashworth left a clue in the club yearbook, penning: "Our first big decision of the summer was to extend Erik ten Hag's contract as men's first-team manager to June 2026, reflecting our strong belief in him as one of Europe's top coaches, and the partner we want to continue working with to get the team back to the levels expected."
Ashworth and Berrada appeared to be all in for Ten Hag five weeks back, but United's poor two wins out of seven games run between September and October internationals tells a different story. It's been their worst kick-off to a season in 35 years.
Meanwhile, 51-year-old Tuchel couldn't hide his enthusiasm about United last term, gushing enigmatic charm before Bayern squared off with them in Champions League group action. The German even brought up United's '99 Champions League deed against Bayern without being nudged.
Tuchel also boasts Premier League experience from his time at Chelsea, where he secured the Champions League and Club World Cup titles and led the club to three other finals. However, Tuchel isn't known for long stints.
He spent 18 months each at Bayern and Chelsea, his most recent clubs, and two-and-a-half years at Paris Saint-Germain.
He made history as the only PSG coach to reach the Champions League final in 2020, although they were defeated by Bayern. Tuchel oversaw back-to-back Ligue 1 title wins with PSG and a Bundesliga title victory with Bayern in 2023.
