Sol Bamba, who played for Cardiff City, Middlesbrough, Leeds United and Leicester City, has died at the age of 39 after falling ill ahead of a match in Turkey on Friday

Former Cardiff City hero Sol Bamba has tragically passed away at the age of 39, just days after posting a heartbreaking post to the late Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Bamba had been head coach of top flight Turkish team Adanaspor, which announced Bamba’s untimely death on Saturday night (August 31).

The ex-Ivory Coast international, who also had stints with Leicester City, Leeds United, and Middlesbrough, reportedly became unwell before a match in Turkey last Friday and was rushed to hospital. Just days before, Bamba used social media platform X to share his own grief over the loss of former Leicester and England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

“Deeply devastated by the news of Sven’s passing today. He was not just an exquisite person, but he was also the best coach I’ve ever had, inspiring my journey as a player but also as a manager,” the post read.

Adanaspor - who Bamba had only just started coaching as of last month - released a statement saying: "Our Technical Director Souleymane Bamba, who fell ill before the Manisa Football Club match played yesterday, was taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital and unfortunately lost his battle for life there. Our condolences to his family and our community."

Bamba’s ex-club Cardiff City shared an emotional message which read: "It is with the deepest sadness that we have learnt this evening about the passing of Club legend, Sol Bamba. As a player and coach, Sol's impact on our football club was immeasurable."

"He was a hero to all of us, a leader in every dressing room and a true gentleman. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and everyone lucky enough to know and love Sol,” reports the Mirror .

Leeds United joined in mourning, expressing: "Everyone at #LUFC is devastated to learn of the news that former #LUFC captain Sol Bamba has passed away. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this tragic time. Rest in peace, Sol, you will be forever in our hearts."

Middlesbrough's X account read: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Sol Bamba at the age of 39. Our thoughts are with Sol's family and friends at this time."

Rival Turkish club Trabzonspor also shared their grief online, stating: "We have learned with deep sorrow the passing of Adanaspor coach Sol Bamba, who wore our jersey between 2012-2014. May God have mercy on him and we offer our condolences to his family and all his loved ones."

Bamba was a key figure in Cardiff's promotion to the Premier League under Neil Warnock back in 2018 and even took on the captain's role. The defender, whose tenure with the Bluebirds began in 2016, racked up 112 appearances across five seasons.

He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January 2021, but by May that year he joyfully shared news of his being cancer-free. Bamba later joined forces again with Warnock at Middlesbrough that same year, dedicating another 18 months to football at the club.

After retiring, Bamba turned to coaching and made a return to Cardiff, serving as assistant manager to Sabri Lamouchi in 2023. His coaching journey took a new turn over the summer when he signed on with Turkish outfit Adanaspor, following their 14th place finish in the Super Lig the previous season.
