Olympic boxer quits with 'broken nose' against female Imane Khelif who failed gender test
Italian boxer Angela Carini quit her bout in tears and with a suspected broken nose after two blows from Imane Khelif - who failed a gender test at the World Championship
Angela Carini quit in tears 46 seconds into her Olympic boxing match with Imane Khelif.
Khelif, 25, had been disqualified from the World Championships last year after she failed a gender eligibility test - but she was allowed to fight in the Paris 2024 Olympics after the IOC said Khelif met their eligibility criteria - despite protests from pro boxers and fans.
Carini didn't acknowledge Khelif ahead of the bell - but after 46 seconds she quit in tears with a suspected broken nose. Two blows from the Algerian appeared to knock Carini's chin strap off, causing the Italian to head back to her corner and quit the bout.
Speaking to the Italian media after quitting their match, Carini said that she had "never felt a punch like it" when hit by Khelif and the "heartbroken" boxer was in Paris to "honour her father and represent her country".
Carini admitted she quit because of fears for her life, the Italian said: "I am heartbroken. I went to the ring to honour my father. I was told a lot of times that I was a warrior, but I preferred to stop for my health.
"It could have been the match of a lifetime, but I had to preserve my life as well in that moment. I have never felt a punch like this.
"I don't fear the ring. I don't fear taking the blows. But this time there's an end for everything, and I put an end to this match, because I wasn't able to continue."
Khelif's inclusion in Paris has been controversial after she was after being disqualified from the Women's World Boxing Championships last year alongside Chinese Taipei's Lin Yu-Ting.
In March 2023, (IBA) president Umar Kremlev said that a DNA test had shown Khelif to have XY chromosomes, while the the IOC later said that Khelif had been disqualified due to elevated levels of testosterone.
Khelif claimed that the disqualification was a conspiracy to prevent an Algerian boxer from winning.
But Reem Alsalem, the United Nations' Special Rapporteur Violence Against Women and Girls, has slammed the Olympics on social media.
Alsalem posted on X: "Angela Carini rightly followed her instincts and prioritised her physical safety, but she and other female athletes should not have been exposed to this physical and psychological Violence based on their sex."
The IOC assumed responsibility for the Olympic boxing from the IBA, and they have used a different set of rules that were based on the rules from previous Summer Olympics - as a result, Khelif was cleared to compete.
"All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition's eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations in accordance with rules 1.4 and 3.1 of the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit," the IOC said in a statement.
"The PBU [Paris Boxing Unit] endeavoured to restrict amendments to minimise the impact on athletes' preparation and guaranteeing consistency between Olympic Games."
Khelif, alongside Chinese Taipei's Lin Yu-Ting, had been disqualified from the World Championship in 2023 - with IBA president Umar Kremlev saying that a DNA test had shown the Algerian to have XY chromosomes. While the IOC later said it was down to elevated levels of testosterone.
The 25-year-old has maintained her innocence - claiming the disqualification was a conspiracy to prevent an Algerian boxer from winning.
