Mason Greenwood quits England as ex-Man Utd star switches international teams to Jamaica
The former Manchester United striker has turned his back on England after the FA made it clear he would never be considered for selection again
Mason Greenwood has switched international allegiances from England to Jamaica.
The former Manchester United striker has turned his back on England after the FA made it clear he would never be considered for selection again. The decision was taken in the wake of Greenwood being suspended from football, after being charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour three years ago.
The Marseille forward denied the charges, which were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. But despite salvaging his career with Getafe and now Marseille, he was told he wouldn’t be picked for the Three Lions in the future.
Greenwood has now turned to Jamaica and completed the necessary paperwork to be available for Steve McClaren’s team. The 23-year-old qualifies for the Reggae Boys through his father, who was born in Jamaica.
And because Greenwood won his solitary England cap while under the age of 21, he can switch allegiances. Jamaica have two games next month, but Marseille are not willing to release Greenwood because the fixtures are friendlies.
Although Jamaica have two World Cup qualifiers in June, when Greenwood is expected to be named in the former England manager’s squad for the first time.
Greenwood joined Marseille from United last summer in a £27m deal. And he has scored 12 goals to become the leading scorer in Ligue 1 this season.
Greenwood was once considered the long-term successor to current England No.9 Harry Kane. But FA bosses decided considering him for the Three Lions again would be too much of a risk due to the adverse publicity it would generate.
