Manchester United legend and Ballon d’Or winner Denis Law dies aged 84
The Manchester United legend won the Ballon d'Or in a glittering career where his trademark celebration of pointing to the sky with a clutched sleeve was copied in playgrounds across Manchester
Manchester United legend Denis Law, who won the Ballon d’Or, has died aged 84.
Law’s family said in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”
Law was born in Aberdeen in February 1940 but never actually played for a Scottish club, joining Huddersfield straight from school in 1955. Five years later the ace joined Manchester City for a then British record fee of £55,000.
After a stint at Italian club Torino, Law moved back to England, moving to Manchester United at the start of the 1962-63 season. The goals began to flow, and his trademark celebration of holding his arm in the air, clutching sleeve and pointing at the sky was copied in playgrounds across the Northern city.
A United statement added: "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players.
"The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis's family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more."
It was alongside George Best and under Bobby Charlton, clad in a red shirt he was best known for. Manchester United are set to hold a minute's silence in tribute to Law ahead of Sunday's home game with Brighton.
He won one FA Cup and two English league titles with United, as well as helping Scotland win the British Home Championship six times.
Law won 55 international caps and his 30 goals make him Scotland's joint top scorer of all time.
After retiring from football, Law became a television pundit, patron of UK-based charity Football Aid, and established the Denis Law Legacy Trust, which operates programmes and activities focused around community engagement and widening sporting participation.
He was appointed CBE in 2016 for services to football and charity and received honorary degrees from Aberdeen, St Andrews and Robert Gordon universities.
He also has a statue erected in his honour at Aberdeen as well as Old Trafford, and received the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen.
