Liverpool close to £126m Florian Wirtz mega transfer but three things could go wrong
Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool seems to be edging closer with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano even reporting it was all agreed - but some things can still go wrong
The saga of the summer looks set to be wrapped up with Florian Wirtz completing his £126million switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool in a blockbuster transfer.
However, the Reds could still fall at the final hurdle with Arne Slot and Co still locked in discussions with the Bundesliga side to hash out the final details of the deal that would see the golden boy of German football head to the newly-crowned Premier League champions.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported a deal was done on Tuesday evening - but that claim has been conflicted by others, who insist there is no agreement on the table for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, despite the Reds having fought off interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich for his signature.
Liverpool submitted a third bid for the German sensation last week and, although it did not meet Leverkusen’s valuation, it was not rejected. Wirtz also hasn't been given permission to travel for a medical yet. And Daily Star Sport has a look at what could still go south in the deal.
Central to getting over the deal over the line is Leverkusen standing firm on their £126m (€150m) asking price. So far, all three of Liverpool's bids have fallen short of this mark.
Leverkusen, according to The Mirror, are refusing to budge on the price, while Liverpool have been outspoken in the negotiations that they won't meet such a high valuation.
The asking price blows the current British record out of the water - which is currently held by Moises Caicedo thanks to his £115m move to Chelsea from Brighton in August 2023.
Liverpool and Leverkusen don't just have to agree on a price, they have to agree on the structure of the payments.
The Reds' latest offer has seen them table £100m plus £14m in add-ons - the fee doesn't just fall short of Leverkusen's valuation, but the two clubs are also talking about the total amount of add-ons and how they would be structured.
If Liverpool and Leverkusen can reach a deal it should be smooth sailing from there with Wirtz keen to make it happen.
Footballers medicals are often a breeze - but it's not unheard of for them to be failed.
There's a small, albeit very small, chance Wirtz might fail his medical for a variety of reasons.
However, there is nothing to suggest in his injury history that could see him fail his medical. Wirtz did tear his ACL in 2022, but his longest lay off since then was in April when he missed 30 days due to an inner ligament knock.
