'Least sexy' UK town revealed but those who don't rate 'ugly' place just biased - expert
The sexiest towns in the UK have been ranked by ChatGPT and it makes grim reading for one historic port town. But boffins believe it has been scuppered by the bot's in-built bias
Grimsby has been named the least sexy town in the UK in a damning study by a supercomputer. The historic port town – childhood hometown of Elephant Man actor John Hurt – topped the list compiled by ChatGPT.
The AI-generated list saw Grimsby beat off Accrington, Barnsley, Motherwell and Stoke for the dubious honour of having the least sexy people in the country. Burton, Mansfield, Telford, Gillingham and Hull rounded off the top 10 least sexy towns and cities.
Grimsby is the hometown of famous comedian Lloyd Griffith and This Is England star Thomas Turgoose, as well as Strictly dancer Kevin Clifton and Line of Duty actress Rochenda Sandall.
Other famous faces from the town include corrie actress Lisa George, comedian Freddie Frinton, BBC weathergirl Keeley Donovan and singer Ella Henderson.
The late actor Sir John Hurt, who attended Grimsby college, portrayed severely deformed John Merrick in the 1980 historical drama the Elephant Man.
But the supercomputer used data available to come to the conclusions, which has been published by boffins from the University of Oxford who quizzed ChatGPT on a range of attributes for UK towns and cities.
Brighton came out on top of the sexiness ranking, while Cambridge was crowned the most intelligent city in the country. Middlesbrough was branded the least intelligent.
Professor Mark Graham, lead author of the study, said Grimsby is the victim of inherent AI bias, adding: "It is repeating what it has most often seen in online and published sources, and presenting it in a confident tone."
And local Jenny Thomas fumed: "AI has got this completely wrong - people in Grimsby are down-to-earth, friendly and funny and what could be more sexy than that?"
The study, published in Platforms & Society, reveals how the chatbot generates answers based on patterns from the text it was trained on.
Prof Graham told the Daily Mail: "ChatGPT isn't an accurate representation of the world. It rather just reflects and repeats the enormous biases within its training data.
"As ever more people use AI in daily life, the worry is that these sorts of biases begin to be ever more reproduced. They will enter all of the new content created by AI, and will shape how billions of people learn about the world.
"The biases therefore become lodged into our collective human consciousness."
OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, said an older model was used by the researchers in the study. A spokesman said: "Bias is an ongoing priority and an active area of research. Our more recent models perform better on bias–related evaluations, but challenges remain.
"We are continuing to improve this through safety mitigations to reduce biased outputs, fairness benchmarking, and refinements to our post–training methods."
