Jamie Carragher slammed as ‘hypocrite’ after furious Trent Alexander-Arnold comments
Jamie Carragher has received backlash from fans for his comments about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s situation, despite previously making contradicting remarks
Jamie Carragher has been slammed as a “hypocrite” following his contradictory comments about Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Liverpool full-back announced on Monday that he would be leaving the club as a free agent at the end of the season when his contract expires, sparking furious backlash from some sections of the Liverpool fanbase.
Those comments and reactions from Liverpool supporters drew criticism from outside the club for their hatred towards the boyhood Red, who spent 20 years at the club and won all there is to win at Anfield.
In a fiery rant on Sky Sports, Carragher hit out at journalists and 'people who have got no affiliation to Liverpool' giving their opinion on the situation surrounding Alexander-Arnold.
He said: "There’s this thing that I’ve been reading throughout the day, obviously when the news breaks. You’ve got the reaction of Liverpool supporters, which are different. Some people wish him all the best, some people are really angry, some people are somewhere in the middle. I’m probably one of the ones who are somewhere in the middle.
"But I’m sick all day of reading about journalists, or other people who have got no affiliation to Liverpool, telling Liverpool supporters how they should feel."
However, fans have pointed out Carragher’s comments completely contradict his stance when Everton supporters reacted furiously to Anthony Gordon after he left the Toffees to join Newcastle for £40million in January 2023.
Carragher previously tweeted: “Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on & off the pitch & who you then sold for 40M. The Peoples club!”
Fans took to social media to slam Carragher, with one user saying: “Also Jamie Carragher. Telling Everton fans what they should think when a local lad, who went on strike, moved from the club.”
A second added: “The hypocrisy from this man when he constantly tell opposition fans how the should feel.” A third slammed: “Mr selective narrative Carragher..why is it media/ journalists ought not tell Liverpool fans how to feel: re Trent, but ok to tell Everton fans how to feel towards Gordon, where you made out Everton fans were wrong for calling him (snake emoji)”.
While another ranted: “Carragher saying he’s sick of journalist an other people giving Liverpool fans loads for having a go a Trent for leaving but had a lot to say about us when Gordon left the little hypocrite only when it suits for him isn’t it.”
Carragher revealed his feelings towards Alexander-Arnold and questioned why he would not want to remain at Liverpool, despite the heavy interest of Real Madrid.
"I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed that as a local player, he doesn’t think Liverpool’s enough when it’s winning," he added.
"We’ve had players who have left in the past - Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard almost left - but that was because they were playing for Liverpool teams that weren’t as good as this Liverpool team.
"Now this Liverpool team is arguably in the best five or six teams in Europe. Just won a Premier League, and Liverpool could be on the verge of something really special over the next five or six years with the new manager."
