Inside prison officer's wild plot to inseminate herself using rapist's sperm in syringe
Cherri-Ann Austin-Saddington, 29, was so desperate to have sex with Bradley Trengrove, 31, she ensured her duties were in the workshops where the pair would meet
A now wheelchair-bound prison officer who fell head over heels for an "exceptionally dangerous" inmate went to extraordinary lengths to impregnate herself using her convict lover's sperm.
Cherri-Ann Austin-Saddington, a prison guard at HMP The Verne in Portland, Dorset, developed a deep infatuation with sex offender Bradley Trengrove. This led to a secret six-month affair, during which the pair attempted to conceive a child by having sex in deserted prison workshops.
When Trengrove was transferred to another prison, their illicit relationship persisted, with Austin-Saddington visiting the convicted rapist under a pseudonym, the court was told. She even hatched a plan to fall pregnant again by smuggling a Calpol syringe in her bra to "artificially inseminate" herself using sperm that Trengrove had wrapped in cling film for her.
After admitting to charges of misconduct in a public office, Austin-Saddington, from Weymouth, received a suspended sentence. The court took into account that she is now wheelchair-bound following a fall after her crimes.
Trengrove from Cramborne, Cornwall, who was already serving a 13-year extended sentence for rape and sexual activity with a child, was further embroiled in controversy as details emerged of his lover Austin-Saddington sneaking in a mobile for covert communication.
The court was told during the scandal that the mother-of-three had listed Trengrove, 31, in her phone as 'husband to be'. Even after his transfer to a different nick, she continued visiting him under an assumed name.
Her infatuation didn't wane, leading to an outlandish scheme to conceive another child with him.
For his role, Trengrove had his jail time increased by two years and three months on top of his current stretch. Bournemouth Crown Court heard Austin-Saddington began her stint as a prison officer in July 2019 at The Verne.
She received a formal warning in 2020 over inappropriate conduct and dealings with inmates. Doubts about her propriety with two cons extended her probation.
Prosecutor Robert Bryan explained: "He said things moved on from being friendly in August-September 2022. He said 'I did maintenance work around the prison, there were lots of workshops, we would meet down at the workshops where less people were around'."
Trengrove was moved HMP Channings Wood in Devon in March 2023. Austin-Sadddington sent Trengrove intimate photos while he was at Channings Wood, but these were intercepted by staff.
On May 26 she visited him under a false name. During a pat down search officers found she was not wearing any underwear and had the empty syringe in her bra and she was arrested.
Emily Cook, defending Austin-Saddington, argued that her client shouldn't be jailed due to her ill-health.
She said: "She had this incredibly devastating physical event that has occurred since her offending. In February 2024, her then partner awoke to find her on the floor. She doesn't know how but something was going on with her spine.
"She is wheelchair-dependent. She has had her liberty curtailed for many months, not by the court but by her ill health. You can see from the messaging, they formed a very intense and infatuated relationship. She takes full responsibility for what she did. She is very ashamed and upset."
