Gareth Southgate wants Man Utd job as Erik ten Hag has to prove Sir Jim Ratcliffe wrong

Erik ten Hag will be looking over his shoulder as the new Premier League season starts, knowing that if Sir Jim Ratcliffe could have sacked him and appointed Gareth Southgate, he would have done

Erik ten Hag will be looking in his rearview mirror.

And what he will see is a manager lurking in the distance, who wants to take his place as Manchester United manager. Had United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe known what he does now, he might have been less keen to hand Ten Hag a contract extension.

Because Gareth Southgate has resigned as England boss - and is on the market once again. A manager Ratcliffe has a lot of respect for. Unlike Ten Hag.

It's doubtful Ratcliffe would leave Southgate in limbo while he decided whether to sack him or not. And it's impossible to think Ratcliffe would go behind Southgate's back and speak to another manager about replacing him, which is what Ratcliffe did when it comes to Thomas Tuchel.

In his ideal world, Ratcliffe wanted to get rid of Ten Hag at the end of last season and appoint Southgate instead. But he couldn't, because Southgate was leading England at Euro 2024.

So he decided to give Ten Hag a stay of execution. But don't be fooled, because the contract Ten Hag has recently signed isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Okay, so it might guarantee Ten Hag a bigger chunk of compensation if or when - he's sacked. But apart from this, it guarantees the Dutchman nothing.
And considering Ratcliffe's immense wealth, he wouldn't blink an eye at having to cough up a few million quid to get rid of Ten Hag, if that's what was required. It shouldn't be lost on Ten Hag that Southgate is part of Ratcliffe's sporting inner circle.

He's friends with Sir Dave Brailsford, and even bigger mates with new United sporting director Dan Ashworth. United face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 10, then host bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League a few weeks later.

The pressure to get positive results will be on Ten Hag from the get go next season. And if he hits a bad run of them, there is one bloke in particular waiting to replace him.
