Five things new England boss Lee Carsley learned as Republic of Ireland beat in style
England got their Nations League campaign off to a perfect start after interim boss Lee Carsley's side swatted aside the Republic of Ireland 2-0 at the Aviva Stadium
England got life under interim boss Lee Carsley off to the perfect start with a routine 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.
Goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish saw the Three Lions past Ireland in what was a comfortable win for Carsley and co. While England's performance dropped off slightly in the second half, they played some sublime football in the opening 45 minutes, and looked far more controlled in possession than they did under former boss Gareth Southgate.
England were completely dominant in the first half, with Ireland having no answers for Carsley's side. And the Nations League clash against Ireland saw the interim boss hand international debuts to Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes. The pair came on off the bench in the second half, showing glimpses of real quality.
Here are five things Lee Carsley learned from the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland...
England can actually play good football
Look, on paper, England should be beating the Republic of Ireland convincingly. However, during the European Championships, they failed, on multiple occasions, to beat teams they should have comfortably dispatched.
However, against Ireland, England looked good. While they wained a bit in the second half, their first half performance was encouraging, and looked far more free-flowing than anything served up by Southgate's England this past summer.
If Carsley hopes to keep the senior job on a permanent basis, something which could be prevented should the FA go all out to try and convince Pep Guardiola to become the boss of the Three Lions, he has done himself no harm after England's performance against Ireland.
Trent Alexander-Arnold's best position is at right-back
There is no doubt about it that part of what hindered England's ability to create chances and control games was in part due to them not being able to find a role for Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Under Southgate, the Reds star was utilised in midfield this past summer, in what can only be viewed now as a failed experiment. However, with Kyle Walker having not been selected in Carsley's squad, Kieran Trippier having retired, and Reece James unable to stay fit, Alexander-Arnold should now be England's right-back as long as he is available.
Alexander-Arnold is arguably England's most creative passer, and there is no team on earth that would not want him in their starting line-up. Against Ireland, he produced a number of impressive passes, including a beautiful through ball to Anthony Gordon which led to England's opener, scored by Declan Rice.
After skipper Harry Kane, Alexander-Arnold should be the first name on the team sheet. He is a world class footballer, and it was always baffling Southgate struggled to find a place for him during his time as England boss.
Anthony Gordon should have played more at EURO 2024
With England opting to field no specialist left-back for the majority of EURO 2024, the Three Lions attack down the left flank looked blunt until Luke Shaw finally returned from injury. Kieran Trippier started the majority of England's summer matches at left-back, but failed to provide any threat due to having to cut back inside onto his right foot.
The solution, as was mooted by many England supporters, would be to start Anthony Gordon on the left-wing. While the Newcastle star is right-footed, he would have provided some much needed width and threat from out wide. Of course, Southgate did not do that. But against Ireland, Carsley did - and it worked to devastating effect.
Gordon was at the heart of everything good England produced, with his will to run in behind Ireland's defence proving to be a constant threat. It also allowed Harry Kane to drop deep in some situations to find Gordon in the channels.
While it will be interesting to see whether or not Gordon starts for England when the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer return, the Newcastle winger did his chances of starting more games for the Three Lions no harm with his performance against Ireland.
Jack Grealish impresses on England return
Having missed out on the England squad that went to Germany this summer, Manchester City star Jack Grealish was handed a start by Carsley at the Aviva Stadium. And the 28-year-old did not disappoint the interim England boss. Like Gordon, Grealish was at the heart of everything good England produced.

Constantly flitting in between the lines, the City winger was handed more of a free role with a license to roam while England were in possession. He also finished off a superb England team move for the Three Lions second goal - much to the frustration of the Ireland supporters inside the Aviva.
Ireland fans really dislike Declan Rice and Jack Grealish
It's safe to say Republic of Ireland fans really dislike Declan Rice and Jack Grealish. While Grealish switched allegiances to play for England after having featured for Ireland's U21s, Rice actually played three senior games for the Republic before swapping sides in 2019.
Prior to the game, Ireland fans unfurled a banner inside the Aviva branding the pair, who were booed throughout as 'snakes'. So naturally of course, it would be Rice and Grealish who both scored for England.
