Everton fans fear they'll finally be relegated after opening day implosion amid VAR chaos
It was an opening day to forget at Goodison Park as Everton were handed a footballing lesson by Brighton as they imploded - and fans are fearing for their future
Everton fans have admitted they could finally drop out of the Premier League.
No team has lasted longer in England's top flight than the Toffees - but after an opening day implosion fans fear it could all be coming to an end soon. Sean Dyche's side were already two goals down - after some VAR chaos - when Ashley Young was given his marching orders.
And fans were quick to turn on their team as boos rang around Goodison Park.
"That new stadium couldn't come quick enough... We're a disgrace to Goodison," one fan fumed. While a second shared: "It’s insane how quickly that new season hope immediately disappears when you’re an Everton fan. New season new signings same old Everton..."
"Everton’s first game in their new stadium being in the Championship is going to be hilarious," a third joked. And another added: "F*** you, Everton Football Club."
Kaoru Mitoma had fired Brighton ahead in the first half at Goodison Park before Everton were handed a lifeline in the second half. Dwight McNeil stood over the penalty spot, composing himself, until Simon Hooper was called over to the VAR monitor.
Everton fans were furious, while the Premier League Match Centre explained: “The referee awarded a penalty to Everton for a foul by Dunk on Calvert-Lewin.
“The VAR recommended an on-field review as he deemed Calvert-Lewin’s foot landed on Dunk’s foot and there was no foul. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”
And, in the blink of eye, Danny Welbeck had doubled the Seagulls' lead. "This is the difference - the quality in attack of Brighton," Sue Smith, who was covering the game, said on Soccer Saturday.
"It's a brilliant finish, but Everton make a mistake. Welbeck uses the defender to glide the ball past Pickford. It's so composed."
And it would only go from bad to worse for the Toffees for scything down Mitoma. "If you ever want an easy send off," Mike Dean said, "that's the easiest one you'll have."
Goodison Park's was almost empty when Welbeck's clever pass found Simon Adingra, who rolled the ball past Jordan Pickford. And those that had stayed covered their eyes in horror as Yasin Ayari made it four - only for VAR to chalk the strike off.
It's Tottenham away next for Dyche's side, before they turn their attention to a Carabao Cup clash with Doncaster Rovers.
