In a major blow to public trust, the UK prison service has been rocked by scandal as three separate staff members were jailed for forming secret romantic relationships with inmates

It has been an unfortunate day of shame for prison service in the UK as three workers have been separately jailed for secret relationships with inmates. Three separate prison workers who engaged in inappropriate romantic relationships with inmates have undermined public confidence in prison security and staff integrity.

Each case involved serious breaches of trust, with the workers facing custodial sentences for misconduct in public office. The Daily Star takes a look at all the cases that have rocked the nation today (December 16).

In the first case, Melissa Murphy, a prison tutor at HMP Chelmsford, was sentenced to eight months after love letters and a photograph revealed her secret relationship with an inmate, though no physical contact was proven.

The 49-year-old had a photograph of the prisoner in her bedroom at home. She subsequently admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner at HMP Chelmsford.

Their budding relationship came to light when another staff member tried to enter a classroom where they were alone, only to find it locked from the inside and Murphy "flustered."A stash of letters between Murphy (previously known as Melissa O'Brien) and the inmate were discovered.

The second case saw Heidi Bessant, an operational support worker at HMP Leyhill, jailed for six months after she took a drug-dealing inmate out on dates during his day release. She also managed his finances, and maintained regular communication, all while he was serving time for serious offences.

At Bristol Crown Court, Bessant pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office and received a six-month prison sentence. Read more about the case here .

In the third case, Rebecca Pinckard, a prison officer at HMP Highpoint, received a 32-week sentence after her body-worn camera inadvertently recorded her performing a sex act on an inmate. Further evidence showed more ongoing inappropriate contact and exchanged sexual videos.

The 46-year-old had the "intimate encounter" with serving prisoner Erion Nakdi, 42, in a store cupboard. The mum, of Six Mile Bottom, Cambridgeshire, had previously sent a Moonpig card to the Albanian national who is serving a 16-year sentence for drugs offences.
