Chelsea next manager options as Enzo Maresca sacked and replacement favourite emerges
Enzo Maresca has been sacked by Chelsea after winning just one of their last seven matches, with a bookmakers' favourite heading a list of five potential replacements
Chelsea are on the hunt for yet another new manager after sacking Enzo Maresca.
The Italian manager, 45, has found himself out of a job before Chelsea's next match against Manchester City on Sunday. The Blues' performances have been lacklustre with just one win in seven Premier League games and there were rumblings of discord behind the scenes, after Maresca failed to attend a press conference following the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, when he was supposedly ill.
However, it now appears he may have deliberately missed facing the media and that the west London outfit have started searching for a new boss after his sacking was confirmed. Chelsea, spearheaded by owner/chairman Todd Boehly, co-controlling owner and director Behdad Eghbali, and co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, has already seen managers like Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Mauricio Pochettino come and go.
Chelsea are no stranger to managerial changes mid-season. The Blues are still vying for a top-four spot and are well-positioned in the Champions League. This makes the Chelsea job an enticing prospect for any potential successor, despite the squad's clear deficiencies.
Taking up the reins halfway through the season comes with its own set of challenges, but the club's willingness to splash the cash would likely sweeten the deal, reports the Mirror.
Despite their recent slump, winning only one of their last seven matches, Chelsea boasts a youthful squad brimming with talent and promise. Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez form one of the most thrilling midfield duos in football.
Add to that attacking prowess from the likes of Cole Palmer and Estevao, and the potential for success in the upcoming years is big - if the ownership change approach and allow a new manager to also recruit older players with experience.
With this in mind, let's take a look at who could be in the running to replace Maresca.
Xavi
Xavi is the favourite among bookmakers and currently jobless, making the 45-year-old a more appealing prospect as there's no need to pay compensation to another club.
The Spaniard, one of the best midfielders of all time, is recognised as one of the most astute football minds of his generation and has demonstrated his managerial prowess.
He clinched La Liga in 2022-23 when he returned to helm Barcelona, but undoubtedly feels he still has something to prove in the dugout, after leaving the club following a disappointing campaign the following year.
Liam Rosenior
Former Fulham, Hull City and Brighton defender Liam Rosenior is carving out an impressive reputation at Strasbourg, another team under the BlueCo umbrella, so a move to Stamford Bridge could be relatively straightforward.
Despite not managing a traditional French powerhouse, he's proving his mettle as a manager. In Ligue 1, Strasbourg are within touching distance of the European places and managed a commendable draw against PSG earlier this year. They're also leading the pack in the Europa Conference League.
Rosenior, 41, has demonstrated a knack for bringing out the best in players - former Chelsea player Ben Chilwell moved to France in the summer and has found his form again under Rosenior.
Oliver Glasner
The 51-year-old Austrian manager's standing has been on a steady rise since taking over at Crystal Palace. He guided them to FA Cup triumph last year and then bagged the Community Shield to kick off this season.
All these achievements have come while the Eagles have seen their top players depart in the transfer window.
Before his stint in England, Glasner clinched the Europa League title with Frankfurt. However, it's clear that he's becoming increasingly frustrated with the perceived lack of ambition in the transfer market - and he may eventually feel as though he's exhausted all possibilities with the resources at hand.
Unai Emery
Another Premier League manager who is clearly punching above his weight. The question remains how long the Spanish boss, 54, will feel he can continue to propel Aston Villa forward.
He appears incredibly settled and has free rein at the Midlands club, but after less than stellar spells at Arsenal and PSG, some believe that Emery might be itching for another shot with one of Europe's top clubs.
Prising him away from Villa Park mid-season, however, seems a near-impossible task. And it's hard to see why he would want to give up the influence and control he wields at Villa for the behind the scenes dysfunction of Chelsea.
Cesc Fabregas
A contemporary manager who is carving out an impressive reputation for himself. Fabregas, 38, a former Chelsea player with two titles under his belt, is currently at the helm at Como in Italy.
His tactical approach and methods have garnered praise, and he has guided the underdogs to sixth place in Serie A - good enough for a European spot at the moment.
Having claimed victories over heavyweights like Juventus, he would undoubtedly jump at the chance to take on a top job if the opportunity arises.
