Coventry City have been accused of making the 'stupidest decision of all time' by sacking legendary manager Mark Robins, much to the dismay of their outraged fans

Coventry City have made the 'stupidest decision of all time' after announcing they have sacked manager Mark Robins.

The 54-year-old, who was in his second spell in charge of the Championship side, had been the English Football League's longest serving manager. However, with the Sky Blues currently sitting 17th in the table, Coventry's board have taken the decision to sack Robins, which football fans have branded as the 'stupidest decision of all time'.

Robins took Coventry from League Two to within 90 minutes of the Premier League in a Championship Play-Off Final loss to Luton Town in 2023. And in April this year he was just a penalty shootout away from reaching the FA Cup final in one of the most astonishing comebacks in football history against Manchester United - battling back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 - only to be denied a sensational winner in the last minute of extra time by VAR.

A statement from Coventry read: "Coventry City Football Club has made the difficult decision to terminate the contract of Mark Robins as manager with immediate effect. Since 2017, Mark has overseen the resurrection of Coventry City Football Club from the depths of League Two, to Champions of League One and to a hairs breadth away from both the Premier League and a second FA Cup Final, whilst competing in the Championship for a fifth consecutive season.

"Mark masterminded and built several team over that time that outperformed their budget, outperformed their infrastructure and brought back a playing style, credibility and belief to our City that had been lost and eroded over many years. These achievements will never be forgotten by those who witnessed such deeds and the broader community that once again began to rekindle their affection for our Club.

"There is no doubt that Coventry City today would not be where it is today without the inspired actions of Mark and his team. The Club is well aware that this is a difficult moment after over seven very successful years at the helm and this decision is not taken lightly."

They added: "Mark’s achievements at the Sky Blues, often against a backdrop of uncertainty and financial restrictions, will see him remembered and lauded as one of the Club’s greatest ever managers, who was able to galvanise players, staff, fans and the Club as a whole to incredible feats. We all wish Mark the best of luck for the future."

After a poor start to the season, Coventry have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five games, including a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough and 3-2 win over former Premier League side Luton, before a 2-1 defeat last night at home to Derby County.

And it's safe to say the decision has gone down poorly with Coventry supporters, who have been left shocked by the sacking of a manager who, during his second spell in charge of the club had won the EFL trophy, earned promotion to the Championship, nearly lead the Sky Blues to the Premier League, and oversaw a run to the FA Cup semi-finals just last season.

One fan wrote: "Disgusting decision. Honestly can’t believe it, we wouldn’t even be where we are today without Robins." A second added: "Mark Robins took Coventry from League Two to a penalty shoot-out away from the Premier League. Lost the FA Cup semi-finals due to VAR working for United. His first bad run and the board have sacked their best manager in the 21st century. Disgusting decision from the board."

A third simply responded to the news by writing on X: "F***ing ridiculous." A fourth commented: "This club has made some reprehensible decisions in the last 30 years, but this one surges in at number 1."

And a fifth said: "I hate you. I hate you so much. Mark, thanks for everything. The best manager we've had in my lifetime." A sixth added: "This might be the stupidest decision I've ever seen."
