Baby dies and child left fighting for life after woman 'reverses over pram' in car park
A five-month-old baby has died and a five-year-old child is fighting for their life after a woman reportedly reversed over a pram in a car park in Sydney, Australia
A five-month-old baby has tragically lost her life and a five year old child is in a serious condition following an incident where a woman allegedly reversed over a pram in a car park.
The heartbreaking event occurred on Monday afternoon when the 35-year-old driver reportedly backed her Renault SUV into the two young children. The police have confirmed that the woman is known to the victims. Officers at the scene immediately commenced CPR on the infant until paramedics arrived, but sadly, she could not be saved. The older child was rushed to Westmead Children's hospital in a critical state.
As reported by Nine News, one line of inquiry being pursued by investigators is whether the woman had intended to drive forward, unaware that her vehicle was still in reverse gear.
The driver escaped unscathed from the incident, and a police investigation into the crash, which happened on Brookfield Road in Minto, southwest Sydney, is underway, reports the Mirror.
This tragic news follows the recent report of a two year old boy who was fatally struck by a car while seated in his pushchair after a family day out at the beach. Little Sonny Macdonald was just minutes away from his home in Whitstable, Kent, when the accident occurred.
The car ploughed into the family around 8.15pm on August 16, after the driver lost control and crashed through a metal barrier at Gorrell Tank car park. The child was declared dead at the scene, whilst his parents were rushed to hospital.
An inquest into the little one's death opened at Oakwood House in Maidstone before being adjourned due to the continuing police inquiry. After the incident, officers arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The force subsequently confirmed he had been released on bail to return, pending further enquiries.
Coroner Katrina Hepburn said: "His mother and father witnessed his death, which occurred at approximately 8.24pm. They were walking back from Whitstable beach from the harbour with Sonny, who was in a pushchair. The vehicle continued through a metal barrier down onto a car park below, around a six-foot drop, taking Sonny with it."
Canterbury and Whitstable MP Rosie Duffield said last month: "I was shocked and very saddened to hear about the horrific incident in Whitstable, and I cannot begin to imagine what the family of the little boy who lost his life must be going through. My thoughts are with them and all caught up in this awful tragedy.
"Thank you to our excellent emergency services and all who were there to help, I hope the Police are able to carry out their investigations swiftly and provide some answers about what happened.
"I would urge anyone who may have been nearby to contact Kent Police in case you may have picked up important evidence on your dashcam, or witnessed something that may turn out to be significant."
