Jordan Henderson's Ajax produced football's biggest bottle job on Wednesday evening as they saw their nine-point lead disappear with a 99th minute stunner

Football was at its brilliant best in the Netherlands on Wednesday evening.

In a title race that was already going down to the wire, with Ajax one point ahead of PSV with just two games to go - it took its latest twist in the 99th minute.

PSV had done their job, dismantling Heracles Almelo 4-1 before they turned their attention to Groningen - with Ajax leading FC Groningen 2-1 in the final minutes.

Groningen, who have been stuck mid-table throughout the season, were down to 10 men but in the ascendancy. Thijmen Blokzijl's dramatic 99th equaliser stunned the Euroborg and sent the Philips Stadion into raptures.

The news had filtered through to Eindhoven in a way that only football can. Small cheers started to be heard as confused fans scrambled to their phones to check the score.

Those that had the game streaming watched on more intently, waiting for the back of the Ajax net to bulge. While the players, who were still on the pitch waited for confirmation before charging over the the fans that had remained.

The results mean PSV, with one game to go, now have one hand on the title as they are one point clear at the top - they just have to beat Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.

Ajax, meanwhile, have to get the job done against Twente, and hope for another twist.

Over in Amsterdam, it was chaos.

Ajax players were brawling with Groningen staff and players as tensions reached boiling point. "It's never easy to speak after conceding a last-minute equaliser," said Ajax boss Francesco Farioli.

"It's not over yet. We've got one more match to play: let's go. A goal in the final minutes has brought us joy earlier this season, but today it brings tears.

"We gave it our all, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Still, football teaches us that anything can happen."

Ajax had been third in early December, nine points behind PSV. However, a a run of 13 wins and a draw in 14 games took them nine points clear at the top.

The Amsterdam giants had looked set to reign over the Netherlands again, but their season started to unravel a 4-0 loss at Utrecht on 20 April. In the resulting weeks Ajax's lead has evaporated with a draw with Sparta Rotterdam, a 3-0 home loss to NEC, and now their latest draw.

Ajax, and their captain, Liverpool legend Jordan Henderson, have been branded as football's ultimate bottle-jobs by fans on social media.

"Can't believe Jordan Henderson's claps and shouts haven't got them over line," one fan joked.

And another added: "Jordan Henderson captaining one of the biggest bottle jobs in the history of the game. 2/12 points is crazy!"
